Young, beautiful, thoughtful, and intelligent - these are words that describe American poet Amanda Gorman. Let's learn from her powerful words and share our voices through the poems we pen!

Learners will have a brief introduction about American poet Amanda Gorman's life and will then watch her recitation of her inauguration poem "The Hill We Climb" as presented on January 20th, 2021. We will then discuss themes and meaning within the poem while addressing common literary devices used, such as imagery, alliteration, rhyming, and juxtaposition. This portion will be approximately the first 30 minutes of the class session.

The second half of this class will focus on beginning to write your own poem, using some of the literary devices discussed, and sharing what you have written so far. This portion will be approximately 20 minutes in length.

All learners will be encouraged to ask questions and to participate in sharing ideas, responses, and in writing.

Learners do not need to have any background knowledge in poetry, but, if they do, that is terrific as this class will allow them the opportunity to apply what they already know and then go further.

My undergraduate degree was in Secondary English Education and during that time I designed a poetry unit as a culminating project. Since then, I’ve taught English in various capacities over the past 25 years, and I’ve been a homeschool mom for the past 14 years. Poetry continues to be a special interest of mine, and I enjoy coming alongside students to help them creatively express themselves using this medium.
