Welcome to Wizard Camp! Students are invited to explore some seriously awesome science that seems almost "magical." Each day, learners will learn about a new topic and create a different project based on the science learning objective. They are encouraged to wear their favorite wizard or scientist costume to class if they would like! Topics for each day include: Day 1: Simple Circuits: Students will learn about building a simple circuit using copper tape, an LED light, and battery. This lesson explains the basics of a circuit and electricity. As a project, students will turn their simple circuit into their own magic wand. Day 2: Dichotomous Keys: Students will learn about scientific classification in a fun jelly bean sorting activity. They will learn how scientists use taxonomy to sort living things into groups based on their characteristics and similarities. Day 3: Chemical Reactions: Students will be introduced to mixtures, solutions, and chemical reactions during this fun "potion" creating activity. Students will be able to pick the type of potions they would like to make. Day 4: Magnets: Students will learn the basic of magnetism by building a "magical" swinging magnet contraption. They will also observe a "magical" pencil levitation demonstration, using magnets of course! Day 5: Worm Dissection: To conclude our camp, students will learn about the internal structure of a worm by observing a worm dissection. They may choose to do their own at home if they wish but only under parental supervision.

Orientación para padres
Parents may need to monitor and assist students during Day 3 (potions) and on Day 5 (dissection). If a student chooses to do a dissection, a scalpel or sharp knife will be necessary. Parents need to be present for this activity if the child decides to dissect his or her own worm. Potions day can also be messy, which is why parents are asked to be present. If making elephant toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide is used.
Lista de útiles escolares
These supplies are needed for each day: Day 1: Cooper Tape Roll (adhesive back, 1/2 in wide), Colored LED light diodes (5 diodes), 3 V lithium Cell Battery (2 batteries), black construction paper, tape, hot glue (optional), Paint (optional) ( These items can all be purchased online. They are quite inexpensive on Amazon. Most come in packs with far more materials than you need for this lesson, so you would have many more for future projects.) Day 2: pencil, 1/2 cup multi flavored jelly beans (Bernie Bots Beans are best, but not necessary) Day 3: Students may choose what "potion" they want to make this day. The teacher will demonstrate all three. Project Choices: #1: Blue Slime: Colgate Max Fresh Toothpaste, salt, small container with lid, spoon, Refrigerator #2: Elephant Toothpaste: Large tub or Cookie sheet, plastic water or soda bottle, dry yeast, warm water, liquid dish soap, 3% hydrogen peroxide, food coloring (optional since this can stain), protective glasses or sunglasses, measuring spoons #3: Fizzy Brew: Baking Soda, White Vinegar, large (clear) glass, baking sheet, food coloring (optional) Day: 4: 7-8 wooden cooking bamboo skewers, 5 small rubber bands (or substitute Play-doh or modeling clay), 1 ft string or yarn, ceramic donut magnet, 2 rectangular magnets, small disc magnet, pencil Day 5: paper, pencil, markers

Hello Learners! My name is Corrie Bowman Ostrem and I have been a full-time, certified teacher for 24 years teaching grades 2-7. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Montana State University-Billings. I specialize in Gifted education and have extensive experience with math and science curriculums in these grade levels. I have taught grade K-12 as a substitute teacher prior to my regular teaching career. Additionally, I have worked as a private tutor over the last 10 years and have taught for an online ESL learning company in China for the two years. My experience teaching has been in both the state of Arizona and Montana, and at a private bilingual German/ English school in Berlin, Germany (3 years). I have extensive knowledge and training in the Common Core Curriculum and standardized testing platforms, but also have a great passion for extending the learning and creativity of gifted and motivated students. I have successfully taught over 3,500 lessons online to students from around the world. After school, I have coached math clubs, science bowls, science fairs, foreign language, art, film, architecture, and game-based clubs.
I have extensive experience teaching the full elementary spectrum of standards including the subjects of math, science, language arts, writing, reading, social studies, and art. My passions are in math and science fields, although I typically use a cross curricular approach to integrate all the subject areas into lessons. I believe in student choice and passion-based learning and am willing to tailor my teaching based on student interest or need. I believe all content and standards can be taught in a fun, interactive, and engaging themes, making learning much more fun and memorable. I have a strong desire to help kids reach their full potential and strive to provide opportunities for students to dive deeper into topics, go beyond the typical classroom standards, and develop a love of learning at an early age.
Personally, I am a wife, mother, and dog-mom. I love the outdoors and can often be found boating, fishing, or camping. I have a son, two step sons, and two enormous labrador retrievers who keep me as busy as my children! Education is both a passion and hobby for me. I love my job and could not see myself doing anything else as a career! I hope to see you in the classroom soon!
