Proyectos
This is a one-time course. Students will receive two project during this course, both under the category of "flight". Students will practice their folding skills as they learn and follow along with the class and then explore their skills on their own as they attempt to design their own paper airplane!
Calificación
A participation grade is available upon request. This course does not produce a letter grade as students are formatively assessed on their effort and creativity.

Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés - A2
Grado de EE. UU. 5 - 8
Nivel Beginner
In this interactive, hands-on class, students will explore the science and engineering principles behind paper airplanes while experimenting with designs that break flight records. We’ll cover topics including aerodynamics, the four forces of flight (lift, thrust, drag, and weight), and how small adjustments can lead to major changes in flight performance. The class begins with a brief, lively discussion and demonstration of real-life record-holding paper planes. I’ll guide students through folding techniques, explaining each step as it relates to engineering principles, and introduce challenges for students to test their designs and compete in a friendly "flight distance" contest. The class will include a mix of instruction, live demonstrations, video clips of impressive paper planes in action, a personal design challenge, and an open discussion period to share results and ideas.

This is a zoom live session that will include 2-10 learners. I value student participation and introspection as my position as a middle school STEM instructor is driven by student curiosity and exploration. Students will build confidence with me while creating the same paper airplane as me and will move towards autonomy as they become Engineers and design their own!

Metas de aprendizaje

Understand and identify the four forces of flight (lift, thrust, drag, weight) and how each force affects a paper airplane’s flight.
Apply basic principles of aerodynamics to create paper planes with improved stability and performance.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
This class supports unique learning needs, including ADHD, Dyslexia, and ASD, through a gradual release model with clear, step-by-step visuals and hands-on activities. Students work at their own pace, with ample support along the way.
Orientación para padres
This class involves the use of scissors for some paper plane designs. Parents may want to ensure that their learner has the appropriate skills or supervision to use scissors safely. No media content requires additional guidance, and all instructional materials used are age-appropriate and free from any safety concerns.
Requisitos previos
No pre-reqs are required for this course!

Next Generation Science Standards MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions. MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved. I am a certified middle school engineering teacher with extensive experience in STEM education. I design engaging, hands-on lessons that allow students to explore engineering and scientific principles in creative ways, such as paper plane design, which aligns well with my background in hands-on STEM teaching. I hold a BA in Technology and Engineering Education and graduate with my MA in Integrated Curriculum in February 2025! I specializing in making complex concepts accessible and fun for middle school learners.
