In this class we will be going over how the features baked into Napoleon's decision making during the early 1800s resulted directly in the collapse of the empire he had built. Nepotism, foreign wars, and the Continental System all led to a total collapse of his project. We will be drawing extensively from the works of Digby Smith, as well as quotations from two memoirs from the 1812 invasion of Russia to provide context and insight into the thinking of the French Emperor. Prior experience is not necessary for this class, as we will be looking at the subject from a beginner's perspective via an extensive powerpoint presentation.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will hopefully walk away with a deeper understanding of how Napoleon, widely regarded as a titan of history, actually wasn't as effective as he (and his apologists) would like you to believe.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have studied French language and literature for a decade by now, and during my time pursuing a history minor at Umass Boston have devoted a tremendous amount of my free time to the study of Napoleonic warfare and politics when not researching classical Hellenistic warfare. My expertise on the subject comes from a wide and diverse array of memoirs, first-hand accounts, and secondary sources released over the past century of study in the field from English, German, and French writers.
