My goal for this class is to help students become better readers, and better at reading comprehension, but my ultimate goal is to instill the love of reading and learning in these students. There is so much we can learn from the past and the people who came before us and I want the students who take this class to become lifelong readers and learners. In this fast-paced ongoing class, learners will read one Who Was/Is…, What Was/Is…, Where Was/Is… book per week. (Students will need to obtain their own copy of the book prior to class and read through the entire book.) During each class, we will have a short introduction to meet our classmates and the teacher. After introductions, we will discuss the information presented in the book as well as discussing the literary elements and text features from the book. Each week, students should bring three quotes or summaries of important information they took away from the book during their own reading. Each learner will have time to share and be expected to share at least one piece of information, possibly more depending on the conversation and how many students are in class. We will discuss the literary elements and text features present in the book. These may be maps, photos, charts, or graphs. During each class, I will also have comprehension questions to go over with learners to make sure they read and understand the information presented in the book. As time permits, at the end of class, we will do a fun Kahoot! or Quizlet based on the information in the reading for the week. November 8: What Was the Boston Tea Party? November 15: Who Was Paul Revere? November 22: Who Was Benedict Arnold? November 29: BREAK December 6: Who Was George Washington? December 13: Who Was Alexander Hamilton? December 20: What Is the Declaration of Independence? December 27: BREAK January 3: BREAK January 10: Who Was Thomas Jefferson? January 17: Who Was Benjamin Franklin? January 24: Who Was Betsy Ross? January 31: Who Was Abigail Adams? February 7: Who Was Walt Whitman?

In preparation for this class, each week, I study the American Revolution from US official government archives to ensure accuracy of information and discussion within the book series and the information specifically pertinent to the topic of the week's specific book. You can find the link to the resource here to peruse and check it out for yourself. https://www.archives.gov/research/military/american-revolution#:~:text=The%20National%20Archives%20holds%20records%20relating%20to%20military,Service%20Records%20and%20Pension%20and%20Bounty%20Land%20records.
I will also be well-versed in the ideas of the British opinion on the American Revolution thanks to the book by Dora Mae Clark, PhD Professor of American History and Political Science entitled British Opinion and the American Revolution.
We will also be using Kahoot! and Quizlet in a screen share capacity. Your learner does not need to be able to access these websites.

I am a trained educator for K-8th grade with a love of history. I have spent countless hours researching and understanding history for my own education as well as being able to teach learners. While I do not have a degree specifically in history, it is a passion of mine and I consider myself well-informed and unbiased. I approach sensitive information in my classes with an open mind and do research on marginalized groups prior to class to make sure that they are represented correctly. I use the aid of the Department of Human Services as a guideline for respect and protecting civil liberties in class. https://www.dhs.gov/office-civil-rights-and-civil-liberties
As a substitute classroom teacher over the past 5 years, I have been going into as many different classrooms in as many different situations as possible. I enjoy working with diverse student groups and am excited to help your learner understand history through others' perspectives.
