Experiencia de clase

Join us for a multidisciplinary weekly book club where stories come to life! Through captivating reads, we’ll dive into history, science, literature, the arts, sports, geography, innovation, and social change. Each session sparks curiosity, discussion, and hands-on exploration!

Each week, we’ll kick things off with student sharing. Learners should come prepared to highlight something they found interesting, surprising, or inspiring from the book of the week.

Then, we’ll take it a step further! This might mean exploring the historical context behind the story, engaging in a hands-on activity, or playing a game that brings the book to life.

We’ll also challenge what we think we know! The Who Was books are a great starting point, but sometimes they leave out important details or simplify history. For example, Susan B. Anthony made exclusionary statements about voting rights, and Anne Frank’s father made multiple attempts to bring their family to the U.S.—only to be denied. These are the kinds of discussions that make history more real and meaningful.

On certain weeks, we’ll roll up our sleeves for hands-on activities! When we read Who Was Louis Braille?, we’ll create our names in Braille using everyday household materials. For Who Was Michelangelo?, we’ll try painting while lying under our desks—just like Michelangelo did for the Sistine Chapel!

Any materials needed for hands-on activities will be shared at the beginning of each month, so you’ll always know what to expect.

Learners should read the book prior to class and come prepared to discuss their observations.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
Some topics covered in this book club may include sensitive or complex historical events. For example, our discussions on Malala Yousafzai and Anne Frank will touch on themes of violence in an age-appropriate way, while a session on Henry Ford would be incomplete without acknowledging his antisemitism. You know your learner best—if you feel a particular topic may be too heavy for them, you’re welcome to pause your enrollment for that week.
Lista de útiles escolares
Learners will not need supplies in the month of February. As we progress throughout the year, supply needs will be shared in the classroom. Our typical supplies include things like: printouts, crayons, liquid glue, paper, and pencil. We do not ask learners to bring hard-to-find or expensive items to class.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

Sarah:
Sarah is a formerly licensed Language Arts teacher based in Ohio with graduate-level coursework in reading intervention. She earned her degree from Bowling Green State University, majoring in Liberal Studies with a focus on English. As a mother of three, she understands the importance of flexibility in education and values open expression in learning.

After several years of teaching in the public school system, Sarah transitioned to a more adaptable approach to education, believing that true learning thrives in an engaging and dynamic environment. Her family embraces an "educationally eclectic" philosophy—her oldest child has attended both private and public schools, while her younger two are currently homeschooled. She recognizes the value of diverse educational methods and teaching styles.

Sarah teaches all areas of Language Arts, Elementary Math, and Visual Arts. She also has extensive experience working with neurodivergent learners, ensuring education remains accessible and inclusive. She looks forward to meeting new learners and fostering meaningful discussions in her classes!
