Arguably author Charlotte Brontë's most beloved novel, 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒓𝒆 is a classic that stands the test of time.

But what was it like to be a female author in a time when women were not valued outside of domesticity? What are the themes Ms. Brontë wove through her story of a young orphaned girl-turned-governess and her unlikeable employer? How does a book like 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒓𝒆 remain popular over 170 years after its publication?

In this 5-week course, we'll read 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒓𝒆 together, exploring themes of feminism, loss, loneliness, and love. I'll introduce you to author Charlotte Brontë, bring historical context to life, and help you develop a passion about the story (which means you might end up hating it just as much as you might end up loving it!)

-We will stick to a strict reading schedule that guarantees book completion in the 5-week course time. It's a lot of reading (roughly 10 chapters per week), but listening to an audio version is perfectly acceptable if that is better for you. However, you will want to be able to take notes.

Week One: Introduction to our author, genre, and plot
Week Two: Discussion of Chapters 1-10
Week Three: Discussion of Chapters 11 through Volume II, Chapter 5 (or, 11-20)
Week Four: Discussion of Chapters Volume 2, Chapter 6 through Volume 3, Chapter 4 (21-30)
Week Five: Discussion of Chapters Volume 3, Chapter 5 through the end 31-38

-An essay topic will be assigned during the 3rd week so that you can begin forming an opinion and a thesis. I will read and return your essay with notes and feedback, with the goal of helping you be a better reader and lover of literature. 

-We will also do some dramatic readings together, so get your props and costumes ready!

-Class participation and discussion will be the best way for us to learn together. Come prepared to talk about the story, the chapters we're covering, unfamiliar 19th-Century vocabulary, and give us your thoughts and opinions about Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. Socratic discussion is the center of our time together, and each When Women Write course is designed to prepare you for college and university-level literature analysis.

 During the first live meeting, I will be introducing you to the author and the novel, focusing on cultural, historical, and social issues covered in the story. You don't need to have any of 𝘑𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘌𝘺𝘳𝘦 read yet, but feel free to start it if you like.

As graduate-level work, 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒓𝒆 and Brontë's other works were a focus for me at Oxford University, but I first read 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒓𝒆 when I was 12, just for fun. It moved me deeply, both because of its compelling story and because Ms. Brontë was such a masterful storyteller. As an author myself, I particularly enjoy studying the works and perspectives of other female authors.
