Students are to read the books prior to class. Since most of these books have movies/cartoons that go along with them, your learners may wish to watch those as well. I'm seeing some fun family movie nights coming!!

Have you ever wondered about how many comics/movies/characters were created? Are you looking for an engaging, high interest book series? If so, take a look at the WhoHQ What is the Story of? and the What is/was/were book series!

In this ongoing class learners will read engaging chapter books that tell the story behind many historic movements and events, as well as how various comic/movie/character was created. Learners will read the book on their own prior to our class meeting. We'll start each class with some time to share what we thought was the most interesting portions of the book. Then we'll dig deeper into specific skills, including a different hands-on STEAM activity for each book topic. Some supplies will be needed but will always be basic and fairly inexpensive. Exact list of supplies will be posted in the classroom each Sunday evening, but see the class break down below for an idea of what will be needed. This is a wonderful way to get your students interested in reading. This class will continue for the entire 2022-2023 school year, with new books being added by learner request.

We will meet every other week to discuss a different Where is? book. Classes will include comprehension checks, discussion time, and a hands-on activity. Many of the activities will require materials, but I will try to keep them simple items that most of us have around the house- watercolors, craft sticks, construction paper, etc. Materials will be posted in the classroom each week. Why twice every other week? Simple, as much as we all love our Outschool world, truth is, we have other things going on as well. I feel every other weekly format will give parents enough time to get the book and supplies and enough time for learners to enjoy reading the book while not feeling rushed to finish for class. We've all been in that spot of "Hurry up and finish! You have class tomorrow.". I'd like to avoid that for our learners by offering them more time to prepare for each class.

***Looking for a weekly book club? Partner this class with the Time to Travel! Where Is? Book Series Twice a Month Book Club (Steam Activities) class that meets the opposite weeks.

I recommend purchasing the books on used sites, such as thriftbooks.com. I am not affiliated with, nor do I receive a profit from this site, but have found that books are cheaper there and wanted to pass that info on to parents.

Parent Caution- It is highly recommended that your preview these books prior to registering your learner. Certain book topics (Particularly, Dracula and Frankenstein) include villains, spooky stories and/or somewhat scary content for some learners. Please make sure that your learner is ready to address these concepts. To increase learner engagement, we will be using external resources- Nearpod, Kahoot and Gimkit. These sites do not require learners to have an account or download them to a device prior to class. A private one-time link will be provided in our Zoom chat.

I grew up in Wisconsin where I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at UW Stout. I've taught for the public school system for 14 years in a variety of positions including classroom teacher, interventionist, ELL teacher and elementary science lab teacher. I hold a Masters Degree in Reading and School Administration from Johns Hopkins. After leaving the public school system I've spent the last several years teaching middle school Science and History at a homeschool tutorial while being a homeschool mom. I enjoy teaching hands on engaging courses that spark the interest of students with the ultimate goal of encouraging them to become life long learners. I welcome student interaction and questions.

In my personal life I LOVE to read, travel and explore new areas, especially the beach! I am a Girl Scout leader and adore every single girl in my troop. As a troop leader I am certified in several outdoors areas- archery, canoe, kayak, camping, etc. I can't wait to share some of my love of the outdoors with families here on Outschool.
