People who do not have good critical thinking skills are more at risk of being manipulated, deceived, or mindlessly led to conclusions someone else wants them to have. The format if the class is simple, thought-provoking questions will be asked and students will be given the opportunity to respond. Thought-provoking questions can inspire, fascinate and entertain. More importantly, thought-provoking questions lead to critical-thinking skills which offer many benefits including:
     Reasoning skills
     Analytical thinking
     Evaluative skills
     Logical thinking
     Open-mindedness
     Decision-making
     Fosters independence
This class will encourage self-reflection, enhance language and creativity, and encourage curiosity. Examples of thought-provoking questions are:

Self-Reflection
What is your most valuable possession and what is its value to you!
What is your very first memory?
What is worse, failing or never trying, what would you like to try if you were not afraid of failing?

  Fun
What do you look forward to most each day?
     How would you spend $100?
If you had to see the world in one color what would it be and why?
What is the worst food you ever tasted, describe the taste!

 Interesting
Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?
Can there be happiness without sadness?
Is honesty always the best policy, why or why not?
What is the difference between living and existing?

  Social/World
How would you change the world?
What would be important enough to go to war over?
If you could make a law that everyone had to follow, what would it be?

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this class. Towards the end of each class will be some Would You Rather questions which require thinking skills, making a choice and fun! There will be many opportunities for interaction and discussion.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a masters degree in education/school counseling. I have been in education for over 30 years working at all levels. I started in middle school which I loved but then was asked to go to various elementary schools. I was a little skeptical but then found I loved that level also. Finally I was asked to start some programs at the high schools. Would I be able to enjoy and have great rapport with them? Yes, loved that level too, I just love working with kids of all ages! I want students to be successful learners. Research has established that social and emotional (SEL) skills play an important role in having success in school and in life. It has even been shown that students with good SEL skills score better on tests. It is my passion and mission to help students become healthy learners and that will be the goal of the classes I teach.
I like to be outside gardening, hiking, and playing with my grandkids. I look forward to many happy and rewarding experiences with my future students.
