Metas de aprendizaje

During this overview of beginning reading and writing, students will learn concepts of print, phonemic awareness, phoneme blending, rhyming, letter identification, how to compose and construct a simple sentence, and build their vocabulary and language skills around a Midwestern ranching theme. Specific goals include the following:

1. The student will be able to isolate the initial phoneme of a word and link it to a letter.
2. The student will be able to recognize visual features of a word and locate the word in a book.
3. The student will understand that they need to read and write beginning on the left and proceeding to the right using voice-print match to self-monitor and self-correct.
4. The student will use visual information in pictures to cross check print.
5. The student will recognize a few beginning sight words and read words that are repeated within the same book.
6. The student will remember and discuss what was learned from reading a book.
7. The student will make predictions for a story and connections between the book and their own lives.

Orientación para padres
To provide additional student practice in reading (but not required), caregivers are asked to download and assemble short leveled books. These books are designed and provided by the instructor. In addition, students will need some monitoring to access the letter formation tutorials and assistance in adjusting the video settings to the appropriate speed.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will need a supply of unlined paper and writing tools. Six instructor created student leveled books are provided free for download. The downloadable books are optional for the class, but useful for student reading practice. The downloadable books will need to be printed double-sided, flipping on the SHORT end, folded and assembled according to page number. Ideally, the books can be stapled in the middle fold with a long-arm stapler, but tape will work, as well.

This class is designed to help beginning readers gain a solid overview of early reading and writing skills. With over thirteen years of experience in kindergarten and first grade classrooms, and as a reading intervention teacher, I understand how crucial positive early learning experiences are for student success. This is achieved more easily when their learning is embedded in a topic students are interested in, like animals, nature, and other children.
