This is a group class and learners can join or stop and come back at anytime and can definitely continue beyond 4 weeks! No prior knowledge is required. Here is an example of what the first four weeks may include:

Week of June 17: Kids will learn how to properly blow into the recorder and make sounds. They will learn the finger positions and the different notes that they can make. Depending on age and skill level, we will try to play Hot Crust Buns by the end of class!

Week of June 24: We will work on basic music theory and rhythm. We will practice counting to 4 so that learners will start internalizing the repetitive count to 4 that happens in music. This is the first step to learning any instrument so learning recorder using these steps first will be a great first step to other instruments even stringed instruments.

Week of July 1: We will talk about the musical alphabet and scales. Kids will begin learning how to play the C scale on the recorder and how to use that to jam with other instruments (teacher on ukulele or banjo), which is the most fun part of learning scales!

Week of July 8: We will go over everything we covered in previous classes again and work on any of the subjects that learners feel they are less confident with. We will work on tablature of a song of the learner's choosing. I will help them find a song in the correct skill level.

We will be learning to play the recorder as well as working to understand the musical alphabet, different rhythms and how to read rhythms on sheet music, as well as musical vocabulary with fun activities and games.

I use a lot of fun visuals for learners through Canva which especially helps younger learners to stay focused and to understand the material better! I am proud of being very patient and engaging as a teacher! I hope to help your child find passion in music so that I can prepare them for a lifelong desire to learn!

I live with my husband in a wooden yurt on our farm near the mountains in Colorado. We are both music and writing teachers on Outschool. He teaches guitar as well as the instruments that I teach! His name is Steven Middendorp. I have been teaching ukulele on Outschool for about four years now and I love that I get to teach what I am so passionate about! The classes I teach include ukulele, banjo, general music, farming/gardening classes, and English classes. I have my bachelors degree in Sociology and three years experience teaching English as a second language. I have 7 years experience in gardening and taking care of farm animals. I believe learning should be fun and should be tailored to students as individuals with their individual gifts and challenges.
