This class will teach young learners that they have the power to help their families and their communities. We will discuss ways that family and community members provide support for one another, as well as the concepts of volunteering one's time and making donations. Class will begin with a personalized greeting song for each learner, followed by a review of class rules, and guided deep breathing to center ourselves. Please note that I try my best to use an emergent style of teaching--choosing learning activities based on student interest and temperament in a given moment. As such, we will cycle through up to three relevant activities at student discretion: a read-aloud of "Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt de la Peña with accompanying discussion centering community service through volunteering, a sing-along brainstorming some of the ways in which we help the people in our daily lives, and a scavenger hunt to gather items in your space that are no longer in use for potential donation to a community member or an organization of your choice (if your family is interested in an extension activity). We will finish by checking in with students to see how they are feeling and what they have learned before ending with a goodbye poem to cap off the session.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will identify family and community helpers that are relevant to their experiences, as well as identify ways in which they themselves can help their families and communities to thrive.
