Gain an introduction to volcanology through hands on science experiments, games, discussion, rock identification, and picture slideshows. Learn about the types of volcanoes and lava and what the tools are that volcanologists use to predict eruptions. Find out about some of the most interesting volcanoes in the world and learn about the igneous rocks that are formed out of lava and magma. Play World Volcanoes Bingo at the end of the first class, and don't forget to build your own volcano at home so that we can erupt our volcanoes together at the end of our last class! At the beginning of each class, there will be an opportunity for introductions, sharing, and guided discussion. Students may bring items to class to share related to volcanoes such as rocks, crystals, fossils, geodes, books, or artwork. Day 1: Volcanoes of the World Day 2: Lava and Volcanology The following Nature Explorers animals may occasionally make live appearances: Scaly: the Corn Snake Slimy: the Tiger Salamander Lizzie: The Leopard Gecko PLEASE NOTE: Classes may run up to five minutes over the scheduled time depending on learner discussion and questions.

A variety of optional craft projects will be provided for before, during, or after class. Learners may choose the project that is the right fit for them depending on interest and available supplies. Please check the classroom for detailed instructions about project. Print-outs will be attached to classroom posts. Day 1: WORLD VOLCANOES BINGO Materials: ~printable Bingo card ~coins or small stones or paperclips to use as markers Alternative: generate an online fillable card on a different device or window at this link: https://bingobaker.com#9b5c4eb97aaa762d Day 2: ERUPT A VOLCANO (Please build your volcano before class for in-class eruptions) Materials: ~Empty plastic water bottle, yogurt cup, small jar, etc. ~3 tablespoons baking soda ~A few drops of dish soap ~A few drops of red food coloring or red paint ~1/2 cup white vinegar ~Construction paper ~Scissors ~Stapler ~Tray, baking dish, or dish tub to set the volcano in. Optional: ~small pitcher ~funnel ~safety goggles ~dinosaurs ~art supplies to decorate the volcano, such as: red and orange yarn, streamers, foam, puffballs, etc Optional Extension: Make a more permanent volcano using clay, paper mache, salt dough, plaster of Paris, or dirt or sand packed around a jar.

I am offering this class because I am experienced at teaching children about earth science topics. I have had a lifelong passion for geology, ever since I was growing up in the Rocky Mountains and won my third grade science fair project with a rock cycle experiment!
