Experiencia de clase

A large vocabulary is critical to future success on standardized tests, in college, and in the workplace. So why not start building a better vocabulary right now? In this ongoing weekly class, students will learn 10 vocabulary words during each session. We will examine each word's etymology, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and use in language. Students will also be given access to a Quizlet (online flashcards and games) to practice the words outside of class.

All words are taken from SAT/ACT vocabulary lists and will be different each week. As this is an ongoing class, students are welcome to attend some or all weeks and to skip classes when necessary.

This is specifically weeks 100-136 of the already-running Vocabulary Workshop.

A regular class begins with a quick warmup centered on one of that week's vocabulary words. Then, I present the words by asking students to attempt the pronunciation. Pronouncing it wrong is fine! Then, I show the definition, which they can write on the worksheet, and we look at images/situations that would use the word in different scenarios.

The second part of class, fondly known as the Regurgitation Station, asks students to "regurgitate" (bring back up) the words by typing them into chat when I show the definition. This is a checkpoint for both me and students to ascertain that they are starting to associate the words with the definitions. During this portion, we also cover synonyms, antonyms, and etymology.

At the end of class, students have a few minutes to compose a sentence about an image using at least one vocab word.

Example word set: verbose, urbane, revere, preclude, malevolence, gregarious, equivocal, enumerate, bias, aromatic

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Licenciatura desde University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
