This one-off class covers how our sense of vision works. We begin with a brief overview of light and how it is a type of wave. Then we consider how an eyeball forms an image of the world around us on our retinas. Nerve cells there turn the light into electrical signals and send them to our brain, which interprets those signals as vision. We'll discuss how light of different wavelengths is sensed as different colours, thanks to the colour-sensing cells in the retina. This leads to an understanding of what colour really is, and why the colours we see depend on the biology of our eyes and brain. We'll conclude by talking about some interesting colour phenomena, including how display screens produce so many colours from just red/green/blue, and what happens when you mix coloured paints. We'll answer the question: "Is what other people see as red the same as what I see as red?" Material will be presented with illustrated slides, with time for students to ask questions to ensure full understanding. No prior knowledge is required.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the anatomy of the human vision system, including the eye, retina, optic nerves, and visual cortex. They will learn how different light-sensitive cells in the retina detect brightness levels and colours, and how the brain processes the resulting nerve signals to produce vision and the sensation of colour.

Orientación para padres
This class will touch on the topic of colour blindness, explaining what it is, and how it is caused by variations in the retinal cells of some individuals. I explain that colour blindness is something that some people are born with, like red hair or a birthmark, and not something to feel ashamed of. Students who are colourblind may benefit from some parental guidance before or after the class. I will not ask students if they are colourblind, but students may volunteer to tell me if they wish, and ask questions about it.

Doctorado en Ciencia desde University of Sydney
Licenciatura en Ciencia desde University of Sydney
I have 14 years experience in human vision and colour perception research. I have taught a simplified version of this topic face to face in classrooms with children from K-6, and I have run colour perception experiments with a school Science Club (Years 4-6).
