Hello Fashion Fans!

Do you love vintage and retro clothing and fashion? If so, this is the course for you!

This course is part of the Vintage Fashion Fans series, and it covers the 1970s through the start of the new millennium.

Each week, we will look at the fashions of the decade we are studying. We'll learn the key fashion terms relevant to that decade, the major designers, and essential historical context in order to understand how fashion is shaped by what's going on in the world. This course will use powerpoints (image-heavy!) and short videos as relevant to show the past. Women's fashion is emphasized, but men and children are also mentioned. We will discuss our thoughts on the looks of the past. We will also talk, getting to know each other and discussing our own vintage interests.

After each lesson, I will share resources to help you explore the time periods more in-depth. These resources include things like pdfs of vintage fashion magazines and catalogs, hair styling videos, and more information on historic events.

I encourage learners to dress up for our meetings! Feel free to wear clothes that represent the time we are studying, a period you particularly like, or just in clothes that represent your personality :)

In this 4 week course, we will study:

WEEK 1+2: The 1970s. During this class, we will get to know each other as we learn about the disco fashions of the polyester-filled 1970s. We will look at inflation and its impact on 1970s daily life through the lens of fashion, and we'll see how the mod 60s mini skirt turned into the 1970s maxidress.

WEEK 2: The 1980s. This week we'll Let the Good Times Roll as we learn about malls, big hair, big shoulder pads, neon workout clothes, and life in the rockin' 1980s! We'll learn the major designer brands, supermodels, and singers who set the style in this decade.

WEEK 3: The 1990s. In our final class, we will learn about the grunge look of the early 90s, along with the preppy and futuristic looks of the decade (of course, we will learn what "the Rachel" haircut is!).

If you want more vintage fashion, check out my 1890s-1930s and 1940s-1960s courses.

I hope to meet you soon,
Ms. Elizabeth

Hello!

My name is Ms. Elizabeth, and I am a social studies and history teacher here on Outschool. Thank you for visiting my profile!

ABOUT ME
I love teaching here on Outschool and meeting students from all over the United States and the world! I am passionate about spreading a love of history and world cultures to my students.
I have always loved learning about the past and the world around me. In college, I was able to combine my love of history and teaching by double majoring in history (modern European) and social science education. Along the way, I was able to do a study abroad to Russia and travel through 8 European countries. I truly love learning about others’ lives, and I hope that through teaching history I am able to get students excited to learn about our world as well.

I am from Florida, and after college I interned and taught middle school social studies there for four years... while getting my Master’s in History (Russian History focus). I have experience teaching ancient history and civics, led a schoolwide GeoBee, and coached an MUN team. I recently moved to Illinois and have active teaching certifications in both states. My license covers Social Sciences Grades 6-12, and I have earned a Gifted Endorsement on my license.

CLASS INFORMATION
My classes are interaction- and artifact-focused. I love that Outschool provides the small group sizes needed for every child to have the chance to speak and make their voice heard! I typically use a powerpoint as our base of discussion. We talk through the history, culture, and lives of the people under study. We see and interpret their world through the things they left behind for us. This might mean looking at a relief sculpture to determine the events of a battle, tracing improvements of pottery or statues over time, or, with the vintage fashion classes, looking at pictures to determine what the key trends of an era were and giving our opinions on them.

My big goal is to get students talking and thinking about what they are looking at. I believe that visuals and discussion are excellent vehicles to drive student interest and engagement. Once students are talking about a society or their artifacts, they are thinking about them, making connections and forming opinions, and ultimately growing more motivated to learn about the world around them.
Note: It is not my policy to cancel for small class sizes. I have run plenty of 1-2 student classes.
Note: Yes, if you have siblings or multiple classes I can offer discounts. Let me know what you need and I’ll work with you.

WHERE TO START?
Mesopotamia! I love teaching about the world’s first civilization! A typical progression would be: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome. China and India would typically be placed after Egypt in a regular school setting. My classes are set up such that you can jump in at any civilization. For the ancient Americas, start with the Maya, then go on to either Aztec or Inca. I have single lesson Prehistoric Humans and Persia classes – Persia goes great after you study the Greeks and Prehistory would also be a great starting point 😊

For the fashion classes – they are all set up to be a good first class. Many students have done 40s-60s, then gone back for the earlier years.

Thank you again for reading my profile! I hope to see you soon :-)
