When developing comics it is important that a creator finds their voice and puts it on the page. A lot of comic creators talk about the industry in a way that offers a new perspective for any child who wants to get into comics or just enjoys creating them for fun. We will be using comic creation skills like plot, characterization, and world-building to create different comic panels weekly as we learn about a creator and their work in the industry. March 25th: Khary Randolph and characterization April 1st: Don Figueroa and setting April 8th: Afua Richardson and plot April 15th: Alitha Martinez and conflict April 22nd: Sanford Greene and dialogue April 29th: Kyle Baker and visual storytelling *Topics will remain the same but the creator may change based on relevancy. *Short Youtube clips will be shown of authors talking for quotes but within the timeframe of copyright laws. The creatives will be presented discussion style with thinking questions. The comic book practice will be a 1-5 panel practice of the element of the week based on modeling by the creator and modeling again with the teacher. For example: Drawing the character and labeling what their motivation is and what they look like through different panels.

Hello all! My style is big and I thrive on new information. My passions and background span Literature, Mythology, Gaming, and Library Media. Teaching chose me years ago and I haven't looked back since. I earned my B.A. degree from Marymount University in 2010 and my Secondary Education teaching license with a concentration in English the same year. In college, I became theatre president and that as well has built this huge energetic personality that has connected with students in a way that helps them to meet goals within a variety of social classes. I went on to get my M.A. Degree at Old Dominion University in 2013 which helped me in pursuing my first assignment as a middle school English Teacher. Now I am pursuing an M.A. in Library Science and I am 6 credits away from achieving that dream. During this process, I have been asked to speak on and have been published within the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion which is another passion of mine. It is important that children see themselves and others within a bright light. I also believe that most learning occurs outside of the classroom and I thrive on producing kinesthetic education.
I am always hitting the ground running. I have worked with kids to teach them the basics of Theatre, Forensics, and Debate as well. Theatre is very close to my heart and I think it helps me to keep up the energy and come up with new and unique ways to deliver content. All learners are unique and no formula that works for every single student. I had a few struggles in middle school and high school, but I had others who inspired me to never give up but also to be gentle with myself. I taught myself ways to excel and pass those tips along in my academic-based classes. Please come join me in celebrating all that we can be.
In my personal life I enjoy video games, anime, reading, animals, mythology, and just meeting new people. I just had my first baby in December 2019 and I just want to inspire him to be who he is and always work hard to achieve his goals. Patience truly is a virtue. I really look forward to seeing you in class!
Always remember: “Being like everybody is the same as being nobody” Rod Serling.
