In this class, students will learn: - how to stand gracefully while twirling - proper placement of the "free hand" - parts of the baton - the three most common basic twirls: horizontals, verticals, and figure eights. Students will practice with both hands. - how to do a thumb flip (toss the baton) Students will learn a short routine incorporating all of the basics learned. I will be teaching using the gradual release of responsibility framework: I do, we do, you do. I will give specific verbal instructions, demonstrate the twirl, have students perform the twirl as a group, then ask each student to perform the twirl individually so that I can properly assess. No prior experience is required.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will have basic understanding of patterns and planes in baton twirling, as well as direction of the baton movement, which will help them connect various twirls as they progress.

Orientación para padres
Students will need an open space for this class. We will be practicing a low toss (release of the baton), therefore, be mindful of objects around them that could be potentially broken (including ceiling fans and lighting). If you have a portable device, outdoors, a gym, or a clean garage would be ideal locations. Students need comfortable athletic clothing and athletic shoes. We will warm up with a few stretches, however, light stretching beforehand is recommended. Having a water bottle nearby is also recommended.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will need a baton. I recommend the Starlet II by Starline Baton Company. This is a great baton for beginners. It can be found on Amazon for around $28. Please measure your child's arm from the arm pit to the tip of the middle finger. This is the length of baton you need. Batons are measured in one inch increments. If your child is between sizes, purchase the next size up. If you have questions or need help with this, please reach out to me. Students will need to dress in comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. Loose fitting clothing can be a hindrance to twirling, so I highly recommend athletic wear. Students will also need to have hair secured away from their face.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a Master of Arts degree in Music Education. I have taught thousands of students over the course of my 17 year teaching career. I come from a family of music educators. I grew up around marching band. My dad was a band director and my mom owned her own baton twirling studio. I started twirling at a very young age and continued throughout high school. I was head majorette for two years and then went on to be a part of my high school dance line. In college, I opened my own baton twirling studio to help me pay for school. I loved it so much that I continued it part time well into my public school teaching career (over 10 years). While teaching baton, I became a USTA (United States Twirling Association) Level 1 certified coach. My students competed at twirling competitions and also performed at various events locally. We would close each year with a spring recital. I still twirl as a hobby and I would love to have the opportunity to share this art form with you!
