I am thrilled to share one of Shakespeare’s funniest and most heartwarming plays with you!

Welcome to Twelfth Night, a comedy full of mistaken identities, hilarious pranks, and unforgettable characters. It’s a joyful exploration of love, friendship, and the crazy things people do to find happiness.

What We’ll Explore:

Character Spotlight: Get to know Viola, Sebastian, Duke Orsino, Olivia, Malvolio, and the ever-amusing Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew. We'll explore their personalities, motives, and how they create comedy and heartache.

Theme Breakdown: Dive into themes like identity, love, and deception. We'll discuss why these themes resonate today and how they reflect timeless human experiences.

Historical Context: Travel to Shakespeare’s England to uncover the cultural backdrop of Twelfth Night. We'll explore how Elizabethan views of gender, class, and festivity influenced the play.

Comedy Techniques: Discover Shakespeare’s secrets to comedy, including dramatic irony, mistaken identity, wordplay, and comedic timing. We'll see how Shakespeare keeps audiences laughing and engaged.

Modern Connections: Connect the themes and humor of Twelfth Night to modern movies, TV shows, and books. We'll discuss how Shakespeare’s ideas remain relevant in contemporary stories.

Class Discussions: Share your ideas and perspectives in lively discussions. Your unique insights matter, and we'll explore the play together through questions, opinions, and creative responses.

Here’s What to Expect Each Lesson:

We'll read through Twelfth Night act by act, with lessons covering specific scenes:

I'll provide a short video introduction highlighting key points to notice in the reading.

You'll read or listen to assigned scenes from the play independently. There is an assignment in each lesson consisting of questions to respond to as you read/listen. Once the assignment is submitted, I will provide feedback and send it back.

I'll share a longer video where I will discuss the scenes in depth.

You’ll have an option to respond creatively and critically through discussions, character analyses, scene reenactments, "what ifs," and imaginative projects.

At the end of our journey, you'll be encouraged to watch a performance of Twelfth Night. I'll suggest several wonderful adaptations to choose from.

Get ready to laugh, wonder, and enjoy as we explore why Twelfth Night continues to delight audiences around the world!

Orientación para padres
Shakespeare being Shakespeare and this being a comedy, there is bound to be some bawdiness. I'll address these moments with sensitivity and humor, providing context to help students navigate and appreciate the playful language in an appropriate and thoughtful way. Parents are encouraged to discuss any questions with their learners and reach out if any concerns arise.
Lista de útiles escolares
I recommend "No Fear Shakespeare" as a text. It is availalble on Amazon forabout $8. There are several online versions of the play that can be read for Free. Folger Shakespeare is a good source.

It is highly recommended that students listen as they read. Librivox.org has free version but I suggest finding one in your local library's online catalog or purchasing the play on Audible.

Students will be instructed to watch a full length version of the play. I will list where these can be streamed when possible.
