In this course we will work together to first identify what are the options post secondary school and where do these different options lead. We will look at pathways related to the learners’ interests. In the first session we will do some career researching and learning what are the required skills for careers that the learners are interested in. To help learners identify their interests we will learn a bit about Simon Sinek's Golden Circle to help ground the learners in their values. In the second session we will do some research on post secondary study options including university, community college, military, … We will uncover what a website says (and what it does not say) along with identifying other considerations such as financial, entry requirements, specific majors and their connection to career plus the power of the alumni. You will be given a template to keep track of your findings. The third session will be unpacking the application process based on the interests of the students. Skills in this session will hopefully transfer to what is expected in any application process be it for jobs or higher education or scholarship opportunities. The fourth session will be a recap and some assistance on how to compile one’s educational portfolio plus pointers for designing your resume. The final session will be uncovering a tool for how to make decisions in the future when opportunities are presented. We will look at a few case studies and together create a plan for the subject to decide what direction to choose. Using a case study approach students will have practice with the decision making process. Each session will be highly interactive and the content will be specific to the interests of the learners. Specific advise and recommendations will not be provided as it is important that students make their own decisions. By attending the sessions students will become more confident and have tools to make life decisions.

Helping students make decisions about their future is one of my favorite things to do. I have over 25 years of experience in education and specifically in my role as high school principal I worked very closely with our college counselors to help students access opportunities and seize them. Now I am interested in bringing this expertise and knowledge to Outschool and have learned a bit more about the 'homeschooling/unschooling' routes plus have experience with other educational systems including the UK since I lived there for five years.
