This class is all about the technical design elements of your favorite Broadway shows! We study a new show each week, and learn a variety of design concepts. You don't need to know the musical to gain from this class! Students will learn a bit about the musical, listen to brief parts of the soundtrack, look at production photos, analyze the design, and even practice designing something for the show. All lessons for this self-paced version of this class are presented as pre-recorded video lessons. Students are able to comment, attach photos of their own design work, and submit videos, as desired. Our design classes incorporate project-based learning, allowing every learner to delve into the subject of designing. Your teacher is available to provide feedback and answer questions every step of the way. The role of the theatrical designer has always been a cornerstone for storytelling. Designers are responsible for reading, interpreting, and giving life to the playwright’s words through their artistic and collaborative ideas. Whether it be the choice of a character’s jacket fabric, a piece of music to underscore a significant moment in the play, or deciding when the lights dim on a scene, these design choices give the audience a tactile connection to the world of the play and can create strong emotional connections for the viewers. Each week we will investigate a component of design within a specific Broadway show. We will study a the design of a different musical each week: Lesson 1: Six Lesson 2: &Juliet Lesson 3: Into the Woods Lesson 4: Lion King Lesson 5: Phantom of the Opera Lesson 6: Sweeney Todd Lesson 7: Hamilton Lesson 8: Beetlejuice Video lessons are shared in the classroom once per week throughout the duration of class. Participation is encouraged in this class, and learners are invited to submit videos and pictures of their work for feedback. Learners are welcome to communicate to the teacher with questions they have throughout the enrollment period.
