Are you still a liar??? We’ll start this self-paced video-based class by asking this very question. There is no good answer, obviously, and that’s the whole point! As unreliable narrators, students will be doing some lying… but in very clever ways that will require planning and manipulation of words and information. The Write Club is a series of creative writing projects that can be taken in any order and at any time. They combine a specific literary element or feature with a fun project. All submitted assignments will receive an evaluation that examines writing style, grammar, and content/use of the device. The purpose of this class is not just for students to have an enjoyable writing experience but for them to critically examine how a narrator can manipulate their words and flow of information to achieve a specific outcome in a story. Through a variety of activities, students will observe, learn, and practice their own usage of unreliable narration. The final assignment, which should be submitted for feedback, gives the setting for a specific story that uses an unreliable narrator.

Unreliable Narrator
We’ll start with a warm-up activity followed by plenty of examples. Students will have to decide whether a narrator is reliable or not, and we’ll examine reasons why a narrator might be unreliable.
Then, we’ll transition into students doing their own writing. They’ll write about Harold the soccer player, who is at times a devious liar, naive, and given to exaggeration. They’ll also meet other narrators like a man wielding a chainsaw who is totally NOT cutting down his neighbor's tree!
