Through engaging lessons, students will dive into the fascinating worlds of unique mammals like the long-beaked echidna, proboscis monkey, hammer-headed bat, Cuban solenodon, and more! Week 1Lesson 1Meet the Proboscis Monkey and the Elephant SealIn this lesson, we will briefly review the definition of mammals and kick off our class by exploring the concept of dimorphism and how it has caused male proboscis monkeys and elephant seal to have very strange noses.Week 2Lesson 2Meet the Sulawesi Babirusa and the Star-Nosed MoleThis lesson discusses the how the Sulawesi babirusa's tusks help males compete with each other and the star-nosed mole's specialized sensory organ allows them to survive in a challenging habitat.Week 3Lesson 3Meet the Tonkin Snub-Nosed Monkey and the Long-Beaked EchidnaIn this lesson, we will examine the importance of the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey's unusual facial features for species recognition and the long-beaked echidna's specialized diet adaptations.Week 4Lesson 4Meet the Hammer-Headed Bat and Cuban SolenodonThis lesson explores how the hammerhead bat's unique wing morphology makes them expert insect hunters, how the Cuban solenodon's venomous saliva works as a defense mechanism, and why the hooded seal uses his inflatable nasal sacs to show off to the ladies.
- Students will identify and describe the unique biological characteristics and adaptations of eight unusual mammals, understanding how these adaptations help them survive.
- Students will explore the habitats, behaviors, and conservation efforts related to each featured mammal while developing an appreciation for the biodiversity of the natural world.
