In this ongoing class, learners will practice their public speaking skills while discussing and debating world news from the week prior. This is a great chance for them to learn more about the news of the world and turn that knowledge into thoughtful peer discussions. We will prompt learners with questions and games, but this is a peer-led conversation-style class. The goal is for the students to get more comfortable sharing their own thoughts and opinions while listening and responding to others in a respectful way.

Each week, we will post links to the articles that we will be discussing in class for review prior to class. These articles will come from credible news sources deemed appropriate for kids and teens. We will be discussing current events, discoveries in science, sports, and some overall fun news. We do our absolute best to make sure the articles and sources are unbiased as we feel that it's incredibly important for learners to determine their own opinions based on facts.

During class, we will guide the learners through the key points of those articles and provide opportunities to share thoughts, questions, opinions, and debates with each other. We will wrap up the class by playing a game of Kahoot for a final review of that week’s news.

The overall goal of this course is to educate our learners about happenings in the world around us while giving them a platform to sort out and share their ideas and perspectives.

For example, on any given week the class might cover:

- Recent scientific discoveries, with discussions about how or why those discoveries were made, or what the broader ramifications of this new information might be

- Large gatherings throughout the world, from sports to traditional events, to protests, with discussions of the motivations, histories, and the effect of so many people coming together

- Amazing animals that are trending

- News stories about teens like them!

If you enroll after the week's articles have been posted, you won't be able to see them in the classroom, so just reach out and we will send them over! It's not crucial that learners review them in advance, but it is encouraged.

This class is backed by Outschool's Happiness Guarantee.

Orientación para padres
We will always provide unbiased resources and encourage learners to come to their own conclusions, especially when discussing anything political or controversial. While we will discuss things in that nature when relevant, we will talk about lots of different news stories and trending topics that are interesting to kids and teens.
