The universe is made of incredibly tiny particles that interact to make everything happen. Protons, neutrons, and electrons bond together to form atoms. But how does this happen? What are those made of? These are questions that scientists have been working on answering for the last hundred years. In this class we will look at the experiments that have brought us to what is known as the Standard Model of Particle Physics, and what the pieces of the Standard Model are. This class is the first part to a series of classes to give learners an introduction to particle physics. Each week's lesson will include the following: ~ Listening as I explain the week's concept ~ Viewing a slideshow and diagrams to represent the ideas presented ~ Asking and answering questions throughout the class, aloud and/or in the chat box ~ Sketching models to represent experiments or particles we discuss ~ Adding to what will be a completed chart showing what is called the Standard Model of Particle Physics ~ Discussing the discovery of particles and the importance of particle-level physics
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about the most basic particles that create and rule the universe. By the end of class students will be able to explain what the Standard Model of Particle Physics is, how its organized, and what the different types of particles do.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Licenciatura en Educación desde St. Cloud State University
I have been teaching homeschoolers ages 6-21 for 18+ years. During that time I've taught all traditional subjects and found ways to tailor them to the needs and learning styles of all learners. I have taught math, chemistry, and physics on Outschool for 3 years. I have studied particle physics in the past and continue to attend particle physics lectures to broaden my base knowledge and help me teach the most up-to-date material possible in this changing field. During my time teaching I've had many learners ask about the subatomic world and what we know about it, which has helped me create strategies in teaching this content.
