2-4 horas por semana. The homework, "at home" labs, and other assignments are all optional based upon their need for their schooling (Charter School, Homeschool, etc.). However, all of the assignments help their Hero “level up” and aid them to “win” the game. There will be the typical assignments for a middle school science student that make great samples for charter school programs. However, it never feels like busy work because it is all disguised as ways to "win" the game.
Evaluación
There are experience points awarded for each individual assignment. Students will be keeping a log of every point earned. The total of the point can determine a grade if it is required. Especially if your student is a Charter School Student. However, depending on your situation and schooling status, it is completely up to you as the parent.

Using the methodology of Edu-LARP (Educational Live Action Role Play), students will work together to save the world of Terra Firma from the evil darkness that is spreading across the land. It is only with the power of the Photonic Force with they be able to defeat the ultimate evil, Ignorance!

This is the first semester of a two semester class that covers Middle School Physical and Earth Science. This course complies with the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). The syllabus is structured using what is referred to as the “blended story-line” to also cover different topics and standards in Life Science, as well as Engineering Design NGSS.

Edu-LARP is when we use a story as a backdrop and game mechanics to create a fun and exciting joint story, learning all of the science as we journey throughout the adventure. The students are responsible for the outcome of the story by doing the homework and other projects, making an impact by bringing the "illumination" to the world. This particular game is a "D&D lite" game. However, the entire time we “play the game” the adventurers are learning about the Atom, the 4 Spheres of the World, Chemical Reactions, States of Matter, and Ecology to name just a few. A full list of topics for the semester is sent upon enrollment in the class. In fact, it is how well the Adventurers do on their homework, labs, and quizzes that earn the students experience points to help them level up and gain valuable weapons and armor. This will make them a true warrior of the Illumination and hopefully defeat Ignorance and his minions. All of these topics are integrated into the story to give greater meaning to the students. There will be different encounters and story elements that will bring up the topics of science to make their character grow. In the end the final project is an Adventurers Journal. This is an account of the Science and the Story from the point of view of their Adventurer. Each Student will present there favorite adventurers, what happened, and what was learned at the end of the course.

Here is an intro to the story we will be creating this year:
1000 Years ago, the Darkness had taken over the world of Terra Firma. The great overlord Ignorance ruled over the entire kingdom. However, in and amongst the chaos, three shining warriors, Dutch, Trinian, & Deslock (the sons of thunder) came out of the darkness and used the power of the photonic force to conjure the Illumination to fight back the Darkness and bring a millennia of peace. However, there have been reports of mysterious happenings and the Elders of Illumination have predicted that the Darkness has returned to destroy the four kingdoms of the Terra Firma’s Biosphere. You have been recruited to take on an incredible quest, to find the Son’s of Thunder and save us all. Create your Hero! Journey to the four kingdoms of the world! Save the world!

After 20 years of teaching and developing these Edu-LARP curriculums, I have discovered that this method of teaching helps the students remember the details and have meaningful attachment to the material. There are no “random facts to be tested on.” All the information and science topics taught are important for them to succeed at the game and help their Adventurer become a Hero. Thus, giving the Adventurer a vested interest in learning the material, doing the work, and making memories about the science that are integrated into the memorable story we create together. Think of it as a very long fable that is teaching the science in a very real and personal manner.

Each class will usually go over quizzes, homework, or labs that were assigned the week before. This is to earn experience points to help their Heroes become stronger. Then there will be new NPCs (Non-Player Characters) as their teacher/guide/mentor for the day to drive the story forward. This NPC can do a number of different things. First and foremost they teach elements of science to be covered that day. They might also have some challenges and puzzles to solve. They might also present new problems that are occurring in the story and ask for their help in solving the problem. There will also be "encounters" with strange creatures and the minions of Ignorance where they will have to use their powers of Illumination (the science they learned) to defeat them. Then the cadets need to adapt to the random story and write up solutions to the problems presented. They will then be given homework and lab assignments to complete over the week.

The second semester class listing will be sent out upon enrollment if you wish to get a jump on the following sememster
Metas de aprendizaje
Here are the NGSS Standards to be covered:
MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
MS-PS1-3. Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society.
MS-PS1-4. Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
MS-PS1-5. Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved.
MS-PS1-6. Undertake a design project to construct, test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes.
MS-ESS1-4. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4.6-billion-year-old history.
MS-ESS 2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales.
MS-ESS2-3. Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions.
MS-ESS2-1. Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth's materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.
MS-ESS3-1. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth's mineral, energy, and groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes.
MS-ESS2-4. Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth's systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity.
MS-ESS2-5. Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions.
MS-ESS2-6. Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates.
MS-ESS3-5. Ask questions to clarify evidence of the factors that have caused the rise in global temperatures over the past century.
MS-LS1-4. Use argument based on empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to support an explanation for how characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants respectively.
MS-LS1-5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.nt Boundary: Assessment does not include genetic mechanisms, gene regulation, or biochemical processes.]
MS-LS3-1. Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism.
MS-LS3-2. Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.
MS-LS4-5. Gather and synthesize information about technologies that have changed the way humans influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms.

Orientación para padres
There are a few things that are "battle" oriented as per a typical Dungeons and Dragons game. However, ever thing is kept at a G/PG level as to not trigger sensitive kids. Whenever anyone is hurt, it is the darkness or the illumination that takes over, not blood and guts.
Lista de útiles escolares
All "at home" labs are done with typical house hold products that you probably have on hand. If not, they are usually easily acquire at a grocery store. We also provide alternatives if for whatever reason those items are unavailable in your area. There might be a few craft supplies etc. for the engineering part (such has cardboard, glue, etc.). A full list of supplies will be available on the first day of class. The only thing truly needed is a great imagination and a willingness to be a little silly as we learn!

I am a lifelong learner and I hope I can pass that on to your student, so their life can be enriched by the power of learning! My motto as a teacher is to always teach the class that I would want to take as a student. :)

I have been a teacher in San Diego County for 25+ years for Charter School and home school students. I teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Human Anatomy, and much, much more! I work with Middle School and High School age students. I own and run a learning center in my home town that has been serving students for over 15 years. I am an approved vendors and considered an subject area expert for multiple charter schools in CA. I use creative methods to engage the students mind to learn through interesting and exciting thematic learning (Edu-LARP). I believe that we can cover the standards, but in a way that makes it memorable and makes connections to their own life and the world around them.

I am also a professional Dungeon Master and have been teaching people to play D&D for many, many years. D&D is one of the best table top role playing games you could ever learn. Through the medium of the “joint storytelling”, we can explore new worlds, be ultra creative using teamwork in problem solving, and learn how to be more effective in social situations. As the an individual who was incredibly awkward and shy, D&D helped me learn to think creatively and manage my emotions. It can be one of the greatest adventures your student might ever take.

In addition, I have been a profession ballroom and Latin dancer for almost 30 years. This makes every academic, as well as extracurricular class, exciting and filled with fun. There should never be a dull moment in one of my classes.
