Experiencia de clase

In this class students have fun working together to become characters, move and act out our adventure across an imaginary ocean to an island full of animals and pirate treasure. We collaborate to come up with and try ideas to solve our mystery. In addition to acting and storytelling, we will draw and share our ideas, make and follow a map, and learn some fun facts about parrots. Students will be given the opportunity to share ideas by messaging on the classroom page after class, including their ideas about further adventures of Miranda and her bunny. In fact, this class came about because of suggestions given by students in the instructor's first class about MIranda and the bunny -- "The Mystery of the Missing Macaw."

A typical day in class:
-Creative warm-ups for the voice, body and imagination related to the animals we will meet and the way we will travel during our imaginary adventure.
-Find a letter in a bottle from Dina the pirate about the mystery we will be solving. Learners help fill in the missing information in the letter.
-Step into role and begin our adventure! This is where we move through imaginary environments, transform ourselves into characters, and search for the missing parrot and pirate treasure. While "in role" we learn and sing a funny song about an adventure on a pirate ship.
- We draw and share pirate maps and take something from everyone as we make a plan about how to move forward in our story. We will finally solve our mystery and find the missing parrot during this part of class. Hooray!
-We say goodbye to Dina the Pirate and transition out of our imaginary world, and spend our last few minutes discussing moments we remember.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will develop arts skills, social skills and confidence as they invent and inhabit an "imaginary elsewhere" in dramatic play. Arts skills include using their bodies and faces to transform into a character, expressing original ideas through storytelling, drawing, acting, singing and dancing.
This class is also aligned with age-appropriate science learning concepts, such as "Scientists ask questions," "Scientists base their ideas on evidence from the natural world," and "Scientists share their ideas with each other."

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I love guiding young learners as they discover the power of their imaginations and the possibilities creative drama holds. There is such freedom in using this art form, in which no idea is wrong, and many roads lead to the solutions we seek. I have been a creative drama teacher for almost 30 years, and an actor and playwright for even longer. In recent years I have discovered that this type of learning lends itself wonderfully to an interactive online learning experience. My performing arts skills and teaching experience blossom together joyously as I create these creative drama classes. I look forward to sharing the experience with you!
