There are a thousand (or more) books about the Battle of Waterloo - why? The reason is that evidence, when critically examined can yield new and interesting perspectives on even such a famous and extensively written about topic such as Napoleon's demise in mid-June 1815. This class is designed for students who would like to write about Military History; the sweeping campaigns, the grueling battles, the heartbreaking stories of those who fought. It is also for those who like to write, enjoy crafting a story; especially one that sheds light on a new perspective about a "twice-told tale". Ultimately, this is a class for those "Battlefield Detectives" who revel in the detail of battles, for those who might see what others do not about a story and would like an avenue for expressing this keen insight. Since this class will appear on different days/times what follows is the basic outline of the course. Students are welcome to "drop in" since each session will be independently presented. Previous videos will be available for viewing the student who wishes to join the course underway and will miss very little, content will be continually brought up and especially used during lessons. Week of 22 October - Meeting, Greeting, and Expressing our ideas about Military History Week of 29 October - Why Study and Write about Military History Week of 7 November - The Responsibility to Reconstruct the Past Week of 14 November - The Impossibility of Reconstructing the Past Week of 21 November- Starting at the End - Writing Retroactively Week of 28 November - The Thesis - the reason for writing about a battle, a campaign, a commander, or a war. Week of 5 December - Historiography - key Military Historians with excerpts as exemplars for writing models Week of 12 December - Building the Story around a "lesson learned" without forcing a hypothesis. Several examples of describing/reconstructing battles, campaigns and such will be explored by instructor and students. Students will explore with instructor their ideas for Military History writing.

Over the past 30 years I have taught I.G.C.S.E, A-Level, I.B., and A.P. History throughout the Atlantic region in both private and public school settings. During that time I have instructed students in a variety of rigorous exam subjects . I am a strong advocate of "immersion education" (historic setting RPG) in the Social Studies classroom. My passion is Military History, which I have been enthusiastically studying my entire life. My present RPG classes involve a number of embedded lessons learned (empathy, teamwork, problem solving, decision-making, etc.) through the Three Pillars of Adventure: Exploration, Role-playing, and Fantasy Combat. My Battles & Generals classes are akin to an "On-Going, interactive discussion-based documentary" as one student put it not too long ago....and that seems about right.
