This course will meet five times and it will engage students as they learn the basics of chemistry. They will learn about and experience chemistry by creating models and participating in interactive and engaging activities. They won't want to miss this!

Class 1: What's the Matter? (New updated lesson with multiple hands-on activities!)
Introduction to building blocks of matter and properties of matter
Model structure of atoms in solids, liquids & gases
Lab: Making Matter - Root Beer Floats
Materials Needed: Objects to represent atoms - skittles, M&Ms, or round cereal
A cup of root beer (or another type of soda), 1-2 scoops of favorite ice cream and straw/spoon

Class 2: Atoms & Properties of Matter
Introduction to the structure of atoms and the subatomic particles of atoms (protons, neutrons & electrons)
We will build an atom model
Materials Needed: (Students will need three types of pony beads (or another type of small object such as M&Ms/fruit snacks)

Class 3: Periodic Table of Elements
Introduction to the Periodic Table of Elements (How to read the Periodic Table)

Class 4: Physical & Chemical Changes
Introduction to Physical & Chemical Changes
Potion Making Lab Activity

Class 5: Acids & Bases
Introduction of Acids and Bases
Acid & Base Testing using pH paper
Students will need pH paper, which can be ordered using this link:
