Join us as we explore the haunting tale of Bess and The Highwayman while learning poetic devices and creating a comic strip version of the story!

Session 1: We will make predictions about the poem, then read the first few stanzas.  We will discuss some common poetic devices, and then begin reading the first half of the poem.  Students will collaborate and make predictions as we progress through the story.  As we read, we will identify the poetic devices used and paraphrase the content of the text.  At the end of class today, learners will begin a comic strip-style drawing of the main events of the poem up to this point, using this to help visualize the storyline.  They will have the opportunity to share their comic with their classmates.

Session 2:  We will continue to discuss poetic devices and read the second half of the poem.  At the end of class today, learners will continue their comic strip-style drawing of the main events of the poem, using this to help visualize the storyline.  They will have the opportunity to share their finished comic with their classmates.  If time permits, they will also write a short reflection on the ending of the poem, and will be able to share this as well!
