Experiencia de clase

In this course, students will be introduced to Aristotle's three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos and logos. Students will become familiar with each of these facets of persuasion, and learn the basics of what makes a persuasive argument. We will look at what it means to write and communicate effectively, as well as practice ways in which to do so both educationally and in our day-to-day lives.

This is an introductory communication course designed for middle and high school students. While no formal prerequisites are required, the course will rely heavily on writing and identifying/creating persuasive arguments. It would be helpful for students to be familiar with writing a claim, but we will quickly review this before we dive deep into the content.

This course is designed to be four segments long. During the first week's session, students will learn the basics of persuasion through a detailed look into the history of the art of rhetoric, as well as the theory behind persuasion. During the second week, we will dig a little deeper into the identification of the three rhetorical devices, specifically looking at examples of persuasion in consumerism. The third week will consist of students writing their own persuasive arguments, with time allotted for individualized guidance and feedback between students and myself. Finally, the fourth session will be the time in which students will share their persuasive examples with their classmates, leading to an opportunity for students to collaborate on how to make each other's arguments stronger using rhetorical appeals. Please note that in this course, students will not be writing a full-blown argumentative essay. Rather, they will be writing a series of different persuasive arguments using ethos, pathos and logos, which will inevitably strengthen their ability to write an excellent argumentative or persuasive essay in the future.

All in all, this course will be highly interactive, with the majority of the work happening in the here-and-now of each class session. By the time this course is over, students should be comfortable identifying the three facets of persuasion, as well as have an increased ability to come up with their own persuasive arguments.

California Certificado de Docencia en Artes del lenguaje inglés
Hello Outschool families! My name is Ashley Newman and while I am a teacher by trade, I believe myself to be a learner by nature. I am a graduate of the University of California, Davis, where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, with a triple minor in English, History and Writing. I currently hold a valid California state teaching credential in Single Subject English with a Social Studies supplementary credential.

My passions have always involved three broad topics: English, history and communication. While I was a student at UC Davis, my studies focused primarily on grammar and writing, early modern European history, and the art of rhetoric. I have extensive experience teaching middle school and high school courses, including honors, regular and remedial English, Speech and Debate, Study Skills, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), History, and Drama. In addition to teaching these courses in the classroom, I also have taught targeted workshops, such as resume writing, public speaking, interview skills, and stage presence. I also have coached competitive Speech and Debate at the middle and high school levels for almost ten years, and have had many students advance and place at multiple state and national championships.

My teaching style centers around my strong belief that every student has a voice that deserves to be heard. Every single person in our world has thoughts and ideas that are worthy, and I love to teach students ways in which they can use their knowledge and opinions to be active, contributing members of society. Whether I am teaching English, history or communication, I always encourage my students to find their voice, and I teach them various ways to express themselves through writing, rhetoric and speaking. I truly believe that these three facets are lifelong, in the fact that no matter what a student decides to do in their future, they will have a solid foundation to effectively communicate in both written and verbal ways.

When I'm not teaching, I spend my days chasing around my toddler and shuttling around my pre-teen. I enjoy baking, crafting, reading (especially Young Adult novels), hanging out with our three pups, and watching Gilmore Girls on repeat.

Hope to see you in class!
