In this one-time class, we will first discover the legend of Krampus and the experience the modern day festivals that celebrate him today throughout parts of Europe and around the world! Stories of Krampus date back thousands of years. Krampus has been called the Christmas devil, St. Nicolas's assistant, St. Nick's evil twin, the Anti-Santa, the dark side of Christmas. Whatever you want to call him, his job was to punish the children on St. Nick's naughty list. Keeping his eye on you before Christmas and if you were naughtyhe would punish you accordingly. We will also learn the origin of putting coal in your stocking as it relates to Krampus. Today, Krampus is still celebrated in a very fun way in many parts of Europe (and around the world) with elaborate and breathtaking festivals and parades on Krampusnaght (December 5th). At these festivals, people dress up in spectacular (spooktacular) Krampus costumes and parade through the streets of villages and towns. We will visit these amazing parades and festivals and examine the costumes worn in the parades through my own personal videos and photos of attending Krampus parades. Sound scary?
