I know what you're thinking - but Ms. Maureen, you're the teacher, shouldn't YOU be teaching my learner how to play chess?

There's a famous quote by Albert Einstein that goes:

"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."

This is a backwards designed class. Meaning, the intent of this session is for the learner to explain the game of chess simply to me (a beginner in all aspects of chess) to confirm their knowledge of the game.

The only aspects of chess that I am aware of are:
1. the name of all the pieces
2. how those pieces can be moved on the board.

Other than that, I have no idea how to strategize for a successful game.

Some of the concepts that I will prompt the learner to explain are:

1. overall strategy
2. best opening moves
3. best ways to get out of a tight situation
4. the best ways to use space on the board
5. the best way to use pawns
6. pattern sequences that they know of

This class is best for learners who:
1. love to play chess
2. love to talk about chess
3. just want to play for fun
4. want to get better at their game and practice with a beginner

You can be prepared to win every time, but who knows - if you're a good teacher, I might end up winning a game! The only way to find out is if we play!

*Note - please private message me - my schedule is flexible and I can offer dates and times not listed above.

**Note - if your learner and I are scheduled for multiple sessions, I will keep notes on what we discuss so I can build on the conversation for upcoming sessions.

**Note: We will be using www.lichess.org for all our game sessions. No account or username is required and I will share a link to our game board in the chat once the session begins.

I look forward to seeing you in our session!

ABOUT ME: While I have no formal training in chess play - I have an appreciation for the game and love learning new things, especially from future grandmasters. At heart, I'm a teacher that loves to talk about learning and strategies and that's what I bring to this experience.

Hi! I am excited to be part of the Outschool community. I am a clinically trained Reading Specialist who specializes in working with students with language-based learning differences such as dyslexia, hyperlexia, and students with executive function challenges. My undergraduate work was in the field of English Education. My graduate school training was at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, where I received two master’s degrees in the Teaching of English (Language Arts) and the Reading Specialist Program. Throughout my career, I have taught elementary, middle, and high school students remedial reading and study skills using systematic research-based approaches adhering to the Science of Reading field. I spent over a decade teaching at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, CT, a school that is considered to be one of the best schools in the country for students with language-based learning disabilities. I have always loved literature and believe it is every child’s right no matter their skill level to experience the wealth of information one can learn from the power of language and literature.

Outside of the classroom, I have experience being a decodable author/editor of over 300+ controlled decodable texts for beginning readers. With this experience, I strengthened my knowledge of language development needed for young early readers. I bring this experience of language to every class I teach.

I am fascinated with how the brain works and how the brain processes and categorizes language. I am also interested in the effects that can happen when a student is trained to think metacognitively - in other words, when they are pushed to ‘think about their thinking.’

Lastly, I have an appreciation for what nature can offer the mind, body, and soul. My hobbies include being in my garden, hiking with my dog, stargazing, tarot reading, palmistry reading, being with family and friends and just loving life!
