Note-taking isn't just important for students while they are in school- it's an extremely valuable life skill. Whether someone is reading or listening, taking notes helps them concentrate, which in turn allows them to absorb more information. Note-taking isn't always a natural skill, though, and most students benefit from being explicitly taught how to take notes. In this class, students will learn three of the most prominent types of note-taking: 1. outline, 2. web, and 3. Cornell method. Students will be provided with thorough explanations and examples of these types of note-taking methods, as well as practice how to take these types of notes themselves. This class is geared to not only teach students how to organize notes in a sensible way, but also to touch on active listening in order to identify and take notes on key information that should be written down during note-taking. After we examine and practice the three types of note-taking, we will evaluate the pros and cons of each method so that students can each identify which style will work best for them. All in all, this class will be jam-packed with information in a highly interactive way, with the majority of the work happening in the here-and-now of the class session. By the time this class is over, students should be comfortable with multiple different forms of note-taking, as well as have an increased ability to successfully take notes of their own.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
California Certificado de Docencia en Artes del lenguaje inglés
My life has revolved around communication- both written and oral. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with a triple minor in English, History and writing from the University of California, Davis, and have since taught English Language Arts for over five years. I have also taught specialized courses in Study Skills, just like this course right here. I have extensive training in student organization and note-taking methods, and truly believe that this skill is one that every student should explicitly be taught.
