This class is intended as a supplementary class for learners who are currently studying the recorder using the Suzuki Recorder School Books and Recordings. Prior to class, each student will select at least one piece they have previously learned to prepare for performance. In addition to performing the repertoire they have been studying, learners will play music games to help reinforce the skills and repertoire they have been learning in a fun way while interacting with their peers.

Hello! My name is Janel L. and I am a music teacher. I worked as an Elementary General Music Teacher in the public schools from 2008 until 2021. I play many instruments, but my favorites are the French horn and the recorder. I have recently been focusing on improving my skills on the ukulele, drum set, and keyboard. In addition to teaching music, I have taught phonics in the public schools and English online to students in China.
I hold a B.Mus. from the University of Georgia in Music Theory and a M.M. in Music Education from the University of Memphis. I began Ph.D. studies in Music Education Fall 2021 at the University of Memphis. I have completed training through the Gordon Institute for Music Learning in both Elementary General Music and Instrumental Music. I have also completed the Level 1 & 2 training in Orff Schulwerk and Unit 1, 2, & 3 Trainings in the Suzuki Recorder School through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, along with Unit 1 & 2 in the Suzuki Brass School. As a registered Suzuki Recorder teacher, I have also taught private and small group recorder lessons outside of the schools.
My focus as a music educator is on developing a strong, solid musical foundation. As such, I emphasize playing by ear and improvisation along with developing proper instrumental technique and tone.
Outside of music, I'm a total nerd at heart. I love learning about science, technology, and math. I love to find ways to combine these with music.
