Grado de EE. UU. 5 - 8
This class investigates the vital role geography has played in the last 100 years, where we’ve gone from primarily locally-produced goods, to factories and farms in far off places providing us with most everything. We will explore the history of trade routes, transportation systems and the science of logistics as well. Participants learn the value of reading labels on shoes, clothes and packaging information, to determine where products were made. Learners also practice locating those places on a map, and will analyze and discuss the geographical factors that influence the location of factories, industries and access to markets.

The pros and cons of globalization and the global supply chain are examined, as well. Job losses in one place are net gains in another. Not only do products and people move easily and quickly about the globe, but so do infectious diseases. Participants practice higher order thinking skills, and learn to organize information using the blob mapping technique.

Orientación para padres
This class is designed to give learners experience interpreting and discussing data presented on maps and graphs, some of which we create together. This is an introduction to the subjects of colonization, globalization and infectious diseases, discussed from a historical perspective and in the context of how our integrated economies, transportation and technology systems have both positive and negative aspects. All this effectively can be examined with this age group.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
As a parent, as well as a teacher for five decades, specializing in 10-13 year olds, I’m experienced in dealing gently with sensitive subjects, whether violence, inequality, infectious diseases or other topics, which in an ideal world would not be of concern to our youth. My approach consistently has been to respond directly to a young person’s specific concerns and then move on to underscore that in every situation there always are people who step up to make things better.
