Lectura de verano (literatura): cuentos clásicos para estudiantes de secundaria

This camp is designed for students who like to read but don't want to necessarily delve into a novel.  Reading short stories is an excellent way to improve comprehension as well as literary-analysis skills.

Each class, we will read together a famous short story; I will stop at certain points and check for understanding.  After reading, I will allow time for students to discuss their thoughts and feelings about the story's plot and characters. We will then analyze the story for literary elements such as symbolism, figurative language, diction, and theme.  The syllabus for this class is as follows:

"Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes
"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe
"Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros
"All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury
"Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl

At the end of this class, students will have been introduced to the writings of five famous authors, will have improved their reading comprehension skills, and will have a better understanding of literary techniques.
