At the end of each week, the teacher will assess students' understanding and mastery of the Elements of Literature through a combination of discussion, creative projects, and reflection activities. Students will demonstrate their learning by participating in group discussions, completing visual and written assignments, and engaging in storytelling activities. The teacher will provide individualized feedback through informal observations, student journal responses, and interactive assessments such as plot charts, character analysis, and theme-based projects. Summer Reading Adventure: Exploring The Wild Robot Join us for an exciting summer reading journey as we explore The Wild Robot by Peter Brown! In this engaging class, students will develop their reading comprehension skills while following Roz, a robot who finds herself stranded in the wild and must learn to survive. Through discussion, guided comprehension activities, and retelling exercises, students will deepen their understanding of the story and its themes of resilience, nature, and friendship. Students will explore the Elements of Literature while reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown through engaging discussions, creative projects, and analytical activities. They will examine character development by tracking Roz’s transformation from a machine to a caring member of the island’s community. Through setting analysis, students will explore how the island influences the story and Roz’s journey. By mapping the plot, they will identify key moments, including rising action, climax, and resolution. They will analyze conflicts, such as Roz’s struggle to survive. Students will also explore themes, including survival, adaptation, and the relationship between technology and nature. Using point of view, they will consider how the third-person narration shapes their understanding of Roz and the animals. Through creative storytelling, artwork, and reflective writing, students will deepen their appreciation of how literary elements work together to bring The Wild Robot to life. Finally, Students will step into the role of illustrator, creating their own artwork inspired by key moments in the book. Through drawing and visual storytelling, they will demonstrate their comprehension in a creative and meaningful way. This class is perfect for young readers who love adventure, enjoy hands-on learning, and want to strengthen their reading skills in a fun and interactive environment. Class Highlights: 📖 Engaging read-alouds and discussions 🎨 Student-created illustrations to enhance comprehension 🗣️ Retelling activities to reinforce understanding 🌿 Exploration of themes like nature, survival, and friendship 📚 Understanding the Elements of Literature through character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme Schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in June Focus: Understanding the Elements of Literature (Character, Setting, Plot, Conflict, Theme, and Point of View) Week 1: Introduction & Setting 📅 Monday:– Welcome & Introduction to the Book Discuss what students know about robots and nature. Introduce the Elements of Literature and how they help us understand a story. Read Chapters 1-10 aloud and discuss first impressions. 📅 Wednesday:– Setting: The Island as a Character Read Chapters 11-20 focusing on how the island is described. Create a map of Roz’s island using details from the text. Discuss: How does the setting affect Roz? 📅 Friday:– Setting & Adaptation Read Chapters 21-30 and analyze Roz’s survival challenges. Activity: "Survival Guide" – students brainstorm ways Roz adapts to the island. Discuss how setting influences survival. Week 2: Character & Plot 📅 Monday:Character Development: Who is Roz? Read Chapters 31-40 and track Roz’s emotions and actions. Compare Roz at the beginning vs. now. Draw Roz and list personality traits. 📅 Wednesday: Plot: Rising Action & Key Events Read Chapters 41-50 and discuss how events build tension. Create a plot mountain chart and identify rising action. 📅 Friday: Character Relationships: Roz and Brightbill Read Chapters 51-60 and discuss how Roz changes as a mother. Write a journal entry from Roz’s perspective. Week 3: Conflict & Theme 📅 Monday: Conflict: What Challenges Does Roz Face? Read Chapters 61-70 and categorize conflicts (Person vs. Nature, Person vs. Society, etc.). Small group discussions: How does Roz handle conflict? 📅 Wednesday: Theme: What Is the Story Teaching Us? Read Chapters 71-80 and identify big ideas (friendship, survival, change). Create a "Theme Tree" with leaves representing different themes. 📅 Friday: Major Conflict: The RECO Arrival Read Chapters 81-90 and analyze how the RECO robots disrupt Roz’s life. Predict how Roz will respond. Week 4: Resolution & Reflection 📅 Monday: – Climax & Falling Action Read Chapters 91-100 and discuss the climax. Activity: Rewrite the climax from a different character’s perspective. 📅 Wednesday: Resolution & Point of View Finish the book (Chapters 101-End). Discuss how the third-person point of view helps us understand the story. 📅 Friday: Final Project & Celebration Students present their favorite element (character, setting, theme, etc.) through art, writing, or storytelling. Reflection: What did we learn from The Wild Robot?
