This course will introduce and teach foundational math-based topics needed for high school chemistry. Completing this course will make first year high school chemistry easier during the academic year. During the first four days, students will learn basic mathematics required to solve chemistry problems. The following classes, students will learn about the standard unit of measurement in chemistry called mole. They will apply the skills learned during the first four classes to convert between the number of particles, mole & mass of a substance using the periodic table. Although this is an introductory course, this is also a suitable course to review and refresh what students have learned in the past before taking chemistry. More over, students will learn how to solve problems involving stoichiometry, empirical formula and molecular formula. PowerPoint presentations and practice problems will be used to teach. I will use online assessments to check for student understanding depending on the topic. Worksheet packet that goes along with the presentation and practice problems will be provided. It will be available in the classroom announcement section on the day before class. Students must print the handout before class; learners are expected to take some notes as they fill in the blanks on the handout. This class is an interactive class; when in doubt, students are encouraged to ask questions. I will be assisting students while they work. We cover the listed topics in depth and there will be homework in this course. Students will need to keep up with the classwork and the homework to get the full benefit from this course since later materials will build on earlier materials. The recording of each session will be available to enrolled students after attending one live session (as long as there are students present in each session). This is meant to help learners review or catch up if they miss anything during class as the class may have diverse learners. ⚠️Later topics will build on earlier topics. ⚠️Please note that some students may find this course to be a fast-paced course. If your learners works at a slower pace, I'd be happy to set up tutoring classes that cover the same topics at a slower pace. Tentative Schedule: ⚛️⚛️⚛️Day 1: Scientific Notation Learning to solve math problems involving scientific notations is essential in chemistry and other physical sciences. I will introduce students to scientific notation and discuss why scientific notation is used in chemistry. I will also demonstrate how to use the ‘EE’ button or the 'exp' button on a scientific calculator when working with common mathematical operations that are used in chemistry and physics. =>Scientific notation & using the EE button =>Practice Problems and Homework ⚛️⚛️⚛️Days 2 & 3: Dimensional Analysis Students will learn to convert between various units, for example, converting between kilometer and miles, or converting between kilograms and pounds. Students will also learn to convert between metric units (e.g. meter to nanometer or picometer to gigameter) using a systematic dimensional analysis based approach. =>SI base units =>Introduction to dimensional analysis =>Metric units & unit conversion between metric units using dimensional analysis =>Practice Problems and Homework ⚛️⚛️⚛️Day 4: Rearranging Equations Being able to rearrange equations is key to doing well in both chemistry & physics. I will demonstrate how to rearrange a given equation step-by-step and will provide sample problems using equations from chemistry & physics. =>Rearranging equations =>Practice Problems and Homework ⚛️⚛️⚛️Days 5 & 6: Mole Students will need a thorough understanding of how to convert between moles, particles and mass to be able to use balanced chemical equations to calculate quantities of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Thus, mole is one of the fundamental topics in chemistry. Students will get plenty of practice problems involving mole calculations to practice what they learned in the first four sessions. =>Introduction to mole =>How to convert between particles, mole and mass of an element or a compound using the periodic table =>practice problems and homework =>online assessment (on day 6, if there is time) ⚛️⚛️⚛️Days 7 and 8: =>Balancing Equations =>Stoichiometry 1 =>practice problems and homework ⚛️⚛️⚛️Day 9 & 10: =>Stoichiometry 2 =>Empirical formula =>Molecular formula =>practice problems and homework Please note: =>Please check the supply list before signing up =>I will leave the zoom meeting if no one shows up within the first 5 minutes =>Sessions might run a bit longer (5 minutes or so) at times depending on the students' need and the constitution of the class
