Campamento de verano: Escritura creativa: cuentos

The learner will be informally assessed by their final story and whether or not it is complete and the skills have been applied.

Plot  

Purpose: Students will become familiar with plot structure and the idea that every story has a problem and a solution. 

Students will look more in depth at previous books that have been read and use Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diseen to look at the different parts of a story such as: Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Resolution.  

Students will brainstorm problems that their character could have. 
Homework: Students will create a rough draft. 



Setting:

Purpose: Students will identify setting in a story (both time and place); Students will brainstorm ideas for a setting for their story

Activities:  The class will listen to parts of the stories:
Trombone Shorty by Troy Collier 
Thunder Cake by Patricia Polocco 

Students will brainstorm different types of settings. 
They will then choose a setting and then draw a picture from the setting.  



Character: 

Purpose: Students will be able to identify personality traits in a character.
They will also consider the setting as review.

Activities: 
Pigs by Robert Munsch 
Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diseen

Students will look at the characters in books and describe their personalities and appearance.  
Brainstorm different aspects of a character; What will they look like?  What will their personality be like? Then they will invent a character for their story and if there is time draw a picture. 



Show and Tell – Bring a snack/ Share a story 
Students will bring a favorite snack and their story to class and read it to each other. The story should be no longer than 250 words. Students are not forced to share.  An alternative activity: such as fun writing exercises can fill any empty time

Students will be able to identify the elements of plot, character, and setting.
Students will be able to create a story using these elements.
Students will be able to add detail to stories to increase quality of story.
Students will be able to practice writing skills such as grammar and spelling.
Students will grow confidence in writing abilities.
