In this lesson, with permission from Scholastic, students will enjoy listening to the story Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman. The children at Napville School always ignore Officer Buckle's safety tips, until a police dog named Gloria accompanies him when he gives his safety speeches. Students will discuss the characters, learn how to visualize events, and talk about the theme of the story. After the story, the students will create their own classroom or school safety tips on the attached Star paper or on a blank sheet of paper. After sharing their tips, we will play an interactive Safety game.

Students will ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate an understanding of key details in a text. They will also describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

Students may use scissors to cut out the star paper so parental guidance would be necessary.

Markers or crayons, the attached STAR Safety Tip paper or a blank paper to draw on, and scissors if the student would like to cut out the star.
