I love the classic Fairy Tales and I love reading them with children. In this 4-day STEM camp, we will start every class by reading and discussing a well-known fairy tale. After the story, I will set up a STEM challenge that requires the learner to create something that will solve a problem.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math.
Most challenges will focus on Engineering but other areas my be needed to complete the challenge.

Class Format:
1. After reading and discussing the story, I will present a STEM challenge to go with the story. We will use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to think through the challenge. Learners will have time to design, create, and share.

2. After they share their creation, We will then read the fairy tale with a twist, which is told from a different character's point of view. We will discuss how the point of view can change the reader's reaction to the problem and solution.

3. After the fairy tale with a twist story, learners will be challenged to change or adapt their original design to meet a new STEM challenge with a little bit of a twist.

4. We will discuss how they can adapt their creations and repeat the EDP process.

5. Once again, learners will be given design time, time to create, and time to share.

6. We will wrap up the class by reflecting on what worked and didn't work, how they adapted their design to meet the new challenge and what they can change to make it better.

*PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE REGISTRATION*

Please feel free to message me with questions, but I do work at a brick and mortar school during the day so answering messages will most likely be after those school hours. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. I am in the Central time zone.

REFUNDS:
I use the 'LIMITED' refund policy for my classes.

If a student is a 'no show' and/or misses a class for whatever reason, I will not refund or do a special make-up class. A class recording will be posted in the classroom after the session is completed for your reference. If all registered learners are a 'no show', there will be no recording. If you have questions about the class, you may email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

* I do try to allow students in a couple of minutes before class time to chat and get to know each other before we start class, but when class starts we need to stay on topic.

Metas de aprendizaje

In this 4-day camp, students will learn about the engineering design process and practice their design skills. We will also discuss how stories can change from different points of view.

Orientación para padres
We will be using scissors on most days of the camp. If your child needs assistance with cutting or using scissors, you may need to be close by during class to help. I have also included using a low temp glue gun if the learner knows how to use it. If they do not or you are not comfortable with them using it, stick glue and tape can be used in its place.
Lista de útiles escolares
Here is a list of possible items that learners can use to create their STEM projects for the week. I have (*) by the ones that are most recommended. Learners are not limited to these items, so please feel free to include other materials you think might be helpful. Make substitutions of needed.
Use the fun label I created for a STEM Bin
- boxes, bags (*1 small to medium size box for sure)
- toilet paper and/or paper towel rolls
- *tissue paper and/or regular paper
- *toothpicks and/or wooden skewers
- *marshmallows, gumdrops, and/or clay- something to hold sticks together
- *tape or something similar- heavy tape would be helpful for one of our creations
- *glue- sticks work well, but if your child can use a low temp glue gun, that would be great
- *construction paper and heavy paper- index cards work great
- *craft sticks big and/or small
- *rubber bands
- *coins in baggies or something that can be used as weights
- markers
- *tape measure/ruler
- pipe cleaners
- old cloth/material that can be cut up
- *yarn
- *paperclips
- *scissors
- legos
- cotton balls or stuffing
- a couple of apples...haha.. its for a twist

We will not use all these items each day but will be used throughout the week. Most of them can be used for all of my Group 2 STEM and a Fairy Tale classes and my other STEM and a Story classes.
