Experiencia de clase

*Mid-November 2023 Update* The next several sessions of this class will focus on starting seeds for INDOOR CONTAINER GARDENS, suitable for winter growing. I've left the general wording as-is since the same skills and principles will apply year round. I recommend herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, sage, rosemary . . . but you can try any types.

In this $5 class, students will explore different seed starting mediums individually and as a group. They will start at least 12 seeds to prepare for spring transplanting. We will have a guided discussion on how to increase germination rates and answer the questions, "What is germination?" "What is a viable seed?"
The learners will practice making biodegradable pots.

Younger learners are welcome but may need assistance from an adult.

Older learners are welcome. Growing things is timeless!

Learners are encouraged to share their knowledge with friends and family after class.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn a variety of ways to start seeds, how to increase germination rates, what germination is, testing seed viability, how many seeds to start per plant, how to avoid 'leggy' sprouts.

Orientación para padres
1: Please provide a variety of seeds and a bag of seed starting soil (or peat discs) for your learners. 2: Students will need a dirt-friendly work area. 3: Please provide an old newspaper and a can (such as a soup or fruit can) for the craft.
Lista de útiles escolares
1) Seeds to plant (vegetable, flower, herb, tree). In a pinch, you can use dry 15-bean soup mix or a bag of popcorn kernels (NOT the microwave popcorn!).
2) Containers to start seeds (eg., small pots, empty and clean yogurt containers or recycled plastic cups, peat or paper cups).
Note: some of the recycled paper cups available at stores will get moldy at the bottom. The more expensive ones seem to be okay.
--->We will make some containers in class!
3) Seed starting mixture. I recommend "Miracle Gro Seed Starting Potting Mix" or "Burpee Eco Friendly Organic Seed Starting Mix" (available for $5-$7 at Walmart and local hardware stores).
4) Plastic spoons, popsicle sticks, or plant tags to identify the seed pots.
5) A permanent marker.
6) A dirt-friendly work area.
7) Newspaper and a can (such as a soup can or can of fruit or vegetables.
