During this class, students will explore the beautiful culture of South Korea through traditional clothing. Students will draw a Travel Girl character wearing a “hanbok,” the traditional Korean dress. Students of all drawing abilities are able to enjoy this class as the Travel Girl is drawn using shapes and lines. The class will begin with an introduction to the basic facts about South Korea (location, flag, language, food, and pop culture) to get students familiar with this Asian country. I taught English in South Korea for two years and fell in love with the culture. Next, students will look more closely at “hanbok” and decide a color and design of a hanbok to draw. Students will also decide what other Korean cultural aspect to include in the drawing, for example, a lotus flower, tea bowl or a traditional fan. By the end of the hour, students will have a beautiful Travel Girl drawing and know more about Korean culture in comparison to the student’s own culture. As the teacher, I will guide students to create a unique drawing that reflects their personalities and curiosity about Korea. PRE-CLASS ACTIVITY: (1) In the materials section below, you will find a pre-lesson activity; students should complete the boarding pass before the Bon Voyage travel to South Korea. Also, you will find a basic fact sheet about South Korea and optional homework. I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.
Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.
I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.
On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
