Students will read and discuss the book Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly through guided reading and discussion questions about the book. Pre-reading questions for the discussion with be posted in the classroom before each class to allow students time to read with the questions in mind and to formulate their own thoughts about the book. These questions will help students focus on character development, plot structure, and themes throughout the story. The first class will introduce the book, learn about what inspired the author for the story, and what students predict and infer about the story based on the title and cover summary. The next six classes will consist of discussing the reading questions, the events in the story, the themes of love and loneliness, and how the students felt as they read the story. Students will also be invited to create an art concept of their choosing (music, drawing, poster, game, poem, story, e.t.c) for a visual representation of their favorite part or favorite aspect of the book for the last class. Students are welcomed and encouraged to discuss what they like and don't like about the book, but are expected to at least share their answers to the pre-reading questions. The pre-reading questions will help shape the discussion and allow everyone to voice their thoughts and opinions about the book.
