Class Experience This small-group class provides an engaging and structured way for young learners to build confidence in key first-grade math and literacy skills. Using a no-prep morning work format, students will practice foundational skills in phonics, number sense, addition, subtraction, and early problem-solving. What will be taught? 4/5:Phonemic Awareness: Identifying and manipulating letter sounds through rhyming, blending, and segmenting words. Sight Word Recognition: Introducing and practicing high-frequency words to build reading fluency. Early Math Skills: Number sense, missing numbers, patterns, addition, and subtraction. Problem-Solving Strategies: Encouraging students to explain their reasoning and apply different approaches. Hands-On Literacy Activities: Sorting, categorizing, and recognizing words and sounds. 4/12:Phonemic Awareness: Identifying and manipulating letter sounds through rhyming, blending, and segmenting words. How is the class structured? Each class will follow a predictable routine to help students feel comfortable and confident: Welcome & Warm-Up (5 minutes): Quick review or fun engagement question Skill Practice (15-20 minutes): Guided work on daily slide activities, including: Writing and phonics practice Number sense and early math problems Sorting, rhyming, or sound-based activities Student Sharing & Discussion (5 minutes): Learners explain their answers, share strategies, and ask questions Wrap-Up & Encouragement (Final Minutes): Recap of key skills and positive reinforcement How will I teach? I use a structured, interactive approach that includes direct instruction, guided practice, and student-led discussion. Learners will work on each activity in their notebooks, then share their responses, strategies, and reasoning with the group. What’s my teaching style? I believe in making learning fun, interactive, and encouraging. My approach is structured yet flexible, allowing students to feel successful while supporting their unique learning styles. I use visuals, discussion, and questioning techniques to engage learners and build their confidence. How much will learners interact? This class is highly interactive! I currently work as an instructional specialist, supporting Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade teachers in building strong literacy and math foundations for their students.
