*This is an ongoing class which means it is subscription based. Learners will be charged each week but can join or leave at any time as open spots are available.* *This class is an adaptation from my popular class, So You Wanna Write a Book for ages 11-14. If you are looking for this class for older learners, please use this link: https://outschool.com/classes/so-you-wanna-write-a-book-6EkbHa2K?usid=qpQc8Nx2&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link In this ongoing subscription based class, students will learn what creative writing is and how that translates into writing... specifically writing their own book! Students will learn the structure of a book whether they choose a chapter book format, or an illustration with text format. Students will have complete creative freedom to write what they choose. This ongoing class will begin with learning about writing and the process you go through, and then as the weeks go on, students will develop their writing work. Each class we will discuss parts of writing as well as sharing our writing with the class. Students can choose to share as much as they'd like. We will discuss ways to improve our writing skills and brainstorm together, as well. Students will do minimal writing during class so homework completion is expected in order to fully participate and get the most out of the class. This class does not build from class to class. It is student-led based on the majority's needs. This can include applicable lessons on writing strategies, writing activities to practice employing strategies and Writer's Workshop where students have the opportunity to share their work and receive feedback/encouragement. This is a great avenue to inspire learners to continue with their writing goals. *Students should be prepared with something to share which can include their book/writing idea or actual writing. This will be needed for Writer's Workshop. On other days, students may be prepared with note-taking/writing supplies including pen/pencil, paper and/or word processor for typing. As a teacher, I believe in an equitable experience so I take great care in preparing lessons and classes based on multiple learning styles. This class will be no different. I will use screen share functions to show text, pictures, as well as direct teaching with voice. There will be emphasis on discussion so students can learn in an exploratory way, too. Learners will get to know each other and get excited about where their classmate's stories are going next, too. Students should feel comfortable sharing their content (at least the topic) so they can get the most out of the class format. Students should also feel comfortable with writing whether that be pencil and paper or on the computer. Students should have experience with writing and feel comfortable writing independently. We will not cover writing basics in this class. This class size is smaller, as well, to foster a community and ensure each learner receives quality one-on-one time with the teacher.

Students should have previous experience with writing and feel comfortable writing independently. This class will not cover the basics of writing a story; it is focused on developing skills they already possess and then forming that into a book format.

Hello there! My name is Meri Sue Michalak, or Ms. M, and I teach classes with the intention of developing life-long, confident and independent learners. Whether that be through my fun social clubs, writing courses or private tutoring, the goal is to give students the tools they need to succeed in being their absolute BEST self. I believe that at the root of teaching is not just about presenting curriculum or hitting learning goals; it's developing a child as a whole. You will find that I am extremely personable and engaging with all of my students. I believe that every child deserves an equitable learning experience so I always take care in developing courses that serve all learning styles. I have 10+ years of experience in the childcare and education field. From Preschool Music Teacher, After-School Care Site Director to Private Elementary Tutor, I have a well-rounded professional background. I also have a Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, EC-8 and I hold a Teaching Certificate for EC-8th grade. One of my favorite things about working in this field are the relationships I've built with families and kiddos. Many of my students are ones I've known for years and watched grow into themselves.
You can find me in Austin, Texas (keepin' it weird!) with my husband MJ, preschooler Maxine, and two doggies Luke and Willie. I love cooking, baking (and tending to my sourdough!), writing, reading, watching a good TV series and spending time with friends & family.
I hope to meet you soon! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. I love to chat with families about their specific needs so I can accommodate to the best of my ability.
