"Build reading excitement and engage your growing readers with the most powerful ELA resource for school and home—just for grade 3" (Scholastic).

Storyworks 3 is Scholastic’s multigenre English Language Arts (ELA) magazine that inspires and empowers third-grade students through fascinating, authentic stories written just for them. We’ll transform our unique stories into unforgettable learning journeys that build reading, writing and thinking skills. Every issue of Storyworks 3 opens the doors of curiosity and fosters a lifelong love of reading and learning. (Information above from Scholastic)

Your class tuition includes access to that lesson's Storyworks 3 Digital Magazine article during our live classes and all the resources that go along with it. Enrichment activities (PDF or copyable Google Slides handouts) will be provided for students to complete on their own outside of class after reading the article in class. There are no hidden fees or extra supplies to purchase! I will purchase the digital licenses from Scholastic for each student from the listed class price. I have obtained express written permission from Scholastic to use their materials on Outschool. Student will not need to create an account with Scholastic, as I will provide one password that will work for all students in the class to gain access during our classes.

This literary magazine is recommended for ages 8-9, advanced 7-year-olds, or 10-year-olds needing a little more support. Storyworks 3 creates a new magazine issue bimonthly, and we will meet once a week to cover all of the materials, topics, standards, and learning opportunities within each issue.

In this class, we’ll base all of our reading, writing, grammar, and speech lessons off of the Storyworks 3 magazine, which includes nonfiction, fiction, plays, paired texts, grammar and writing practice, contests, and debates. Each lesson is designed to help students grow their reading comprehension, vocabulary skills, writing abilities, and more in a fun, encouraging environment.

Every other month, we will have a brand new magazine issued to us digitally. We’ll take one article/text at a time, breaking it down to ensure comprehension. Supplemental activities, videos, and/or assignments will accompany each lesson to help students to retain the material and check their understanding. I am always just an Outschool message away if they happen to be working after class time has finished and are needing help!

Since we will have a new magazine every other month, we will follow the format below to cover all of the magazine’s materials in the month, meeting once a week. Some months may vary slightly in what genres are included, but the ones listed below are usual standbys. If any changes are needed to the class topics section after the new magazine is released, I will be sure to update the class listing.

Here’s what Storyworks 3 magazine has planned for the first part of the 2021-2022 school year: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f8_f_SI4wYlErkPxPNezNSv3fk4oGrJu/view?usp=sharing.

As an added layer of assistance to learners, many articles include a lower-level, on-level, and higher-level version of the reading to meet them where they are at and/or challenge them to grow. Audio is also available for the entire magazine, helping students to understand by listening and following along.

Many stories are available at lower- and higher-Lexile® levels to help you effectively differentiate instruction. Our narrative nonfiction also comes in a starter level, for your most struggling readers.

Vocabulary
Challenging academic and domain-specific words are defined on the page. Slideshows highlight key vocab words and include pronunciation, images, and definitions. Printable activities emphasize learning in context.

Activities and Quizzes
Available at multiple reading levels, they allow you to tailor lessons to the individual needs of each student. Each one is based on rigorous standards. Quizzes are modeled on standardized tests.

Videos
In our video read-alouds, the author reads the narrative nonfiction story, while authentic footage and photos provide background knowledge. A game-changer! Also available: Behind-the-Scenes and Author Visits

Audio
Available for many stories, audio helps students increase fluency, and supports auditory and visual learners. No computerized voices—only real people!

Can't-Miss Learning Extras
These are learning extensions curated for each story in the issue, and they're already a learner favorite. Keep the learning going with related videos, infographics, books, and fascinating facts your students won't forget.

Each Issue Includes:
 - Close-reading and critical-thinking questions to deepen comprehension
 - Content-area connections to science and social studies topics
 - Adaptations for each lesson for your struggling and advanced readers
 - Tips for making articles more accessible for English language learners
 - Extension ideas to inspire students to take their learning further
 - ELA standards correlations for each article"

Breakout rooms may be utilized for partner work on answering close reading and critical thinking questions, as well as projects. I will be constantly going back and forth between the rooms, just as I would check on each "pod" of desks within my old physical classroom.

Teaching--especially in English, writing, and language arts--is a true passion of mine. I graduated Cum Laude from Kansas State University in 2010 with a Secondary Education degree in English and Journalism, and then went on to teach in the public schools before setting off on my own as an online teacher and tutor.

My philosophy of education is to make it as fun, personalized, and as interactive as possible for the kids. I always try to even out my direct instruction/lecture time with plenty of opportunities for students to practice these new skills, take polls, play review games, and collaborate with peers.

I am happily married to my husband Brad, and we have two beautiful daughters, Sophia and Elise. We currently reside in Kansas in a small town, and we love the small town life.

Oh, and Zerr is pronounced "Zarr," so it rhymes with "car." 😉
