Home work is optional, but sketching outside of class is always encouraged.Experiencia de clase
Sketching is a time honored way of creating art, it helps create familiarity and comfort with artistic tools, builds speed, and grows observation skills. This class is very relaxed, and is geared to be a space for social interaction and creativity, and to encourage students to follow their instinct while drawing, even if it differs from what I am doing. Class will begin by briefly discussing the breakdown of the image we will be sketching. Afterwards, we will do a “follow along” style base sketch, and then use the rest of the time to refine our drawings using pencils, pens, and light washes of watercolor or colored pencil, or other favorite coloring item. I typically use a pen to refine my sketches, in the style of the bear shown in the class listing banner. Students are invited to chat while we draw, and I am always open to questions about the work we are doing. Class time is usually around 45 minutes, but depends on the class size, and the complexity of the weeks topic. Small classes are usually a little quicker, and complex subjects might take a few minutes longer etc. I try to maintain a calm and engaging environment, emphasizing the process of creating art over the end result. I truly believe any one with an interest and willingness to learn can have a great time in this class. Minimum materials that are required are drawing paper, drawing pencil, and an eraser. Beyond that, a black pen or marker, and some way to add color is a nice addition. After these dates, new topics will be added, and student requests can always be incorporated into the schedule if requested at least a week in advance. If you are interested in a particular week, have any questions regarding the class or would like to schedule a private lesson please let me know. Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hi there!
My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.
I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes around me, or the feelings events, the weather, and books inspire in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.
I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.
In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
