***If your child has already learned some basic sight words, such as color words, "the, it, is, are, a, I, am, have, and, go, like, to, what, was, where," and more, then this class may be a perfect fit! This class is great for those learners ready to continue learning sight words and put those into practice with reading and writing complete sentences!

*If your learner is ready to read sight words, CVC words, and other words but is easily discouraged/frustrated with writing/handwriting, please know that I do not require students to write with me during that portion. When we write our sentence together at the end of class, your learner is more than welcome to watch and interact with me as we work together to identify sounds while I model writing the sentence. Of course, I encourage students to write along with me, and I try to write our sentence at a pace that most students can follow along as I allow time after each word written. I do provide an optional print-out before class that can be used as a guide for tracing the sight words as we learn and write them together. However, I am happy for learning to be taking place with your child whether they write with me in class or not!

Join me for a beginning reading and writing class with sight word practice! In this ongoing class, students will learn four new sight words each week and use that knowledge to read and write sentences with those sight words. In each class, we will start by learning and practicing each sight word through reading, writing, repetition, and movement. We will use our mastery of these new words to read and write sentences together as a class! Not all words included in our sentences will be these sight words. Learners will use knowledge of letters and sounds to decode and produce other words included in our sentences. Students will be reminded of and guided through sounding out each word, one sound and letter(s) at a time, when reading and writing. Digraphs, blends, vowel teams, and other spelling strategies will be taught and reviewed as they are encountered each week. Although each week will have specific sight words and strategies taught, I am a flexible teacher and love to add in other tips and tricks as we encounter them together! I love having fun with my students and letting my class be student-led at times.
***Please note that not all words may be spelled correctly in our sentences when writing. Other than the sight words that we learn, any words we sound out to write together will be spelled phonetically. We will practice segmentation: hearing, identifying, and separating each phoneme in a word as we write. An example of this would be if I said the word “dog.” To segment, or separate, this word, the student should be able to hear and identify each phoneme (individual sound) in the word, “/d/-/o/-/g/.” Knowledge of letters and letter sounds will help learners connect those sounds they hear to the physical letter(s) written on paper. Through this, children are able to put their spoken words into writing! Our goal in this class is for students to practice spelling phonetically, writing a letter(s) for each sound heard in the word they are writing. This is an important stage of spelling and a stepping stone to successful spelling and writing. An example of this would be if your learner writes “casl” for the word “castle.” All sounds are present, and your learner is gaining confidence in using their own knowledge to spell and write independently!

Finally, students will learn and practice correct sentence structure (capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, punctuation) in order to write a complete sentence!

*Students in this class should be confident in all letters and sounds and be ready to use that knowledge to read and write words. This class will take learners from hearing/saying the word to writing it and, furthermore, forming a complete sentence. Bring your letter knowledge, and become reading and writing experts with me!

Orientación para padres
Since this is a class for young learners, I just ask that a parent or guardian be around (within hearing distance) to help if/when needed (example: if technical issues arise and the student needs help in order to hear/speak/participate). It is helpful if your student knows how to mute/unmute. I don't like to mute students, but I will occasionally if the need arises (ex: background noise, computer echo, etc.), in order to make sure all students can hear me. Thank you for your support!
Lista de útiles escolares
I recommend that each learner has something to write with in order to practice writing our sentence(s) together. However, your student is not required to write during class and will be helping me identify sounds and words as I model writing our sentence. I know that some students may be more confident in reading than writing and the pace may vary for writing/handwriting for each student. Of course, I encourage every student to physically write with me! However, as long as every student is engaged and working along with me to write our sentence, whether they are physically writing on their own or verbally helping me as I model writing, there will be learning taking place!
*There will be an optional print-out before class that can be used as a guide during class when learning our sight words that your learner may choose to use to trace/write as we learn.
